Every year when we visit home in Phayao, we take $100 bills because the exchange rate is the highest rate for bills. Thinking this next time taking traveler's checks. and asking if the exchange rate with them higher than $100 bills? I know about the pitfalls of taking cash, so please no preaching. Wife always wanted to do it that way. I do not know about other people's currencies, just a question about the dollar which has got hammered against the baht.

Thank you.

search for Bangkok Bank Exchange Rates. It'll give you the info you need.

It seems to suggest you'll get a bit more for Travelers Cheques. Which is a surprise for me.

I'd open an account here and send money every year personally.

I went there before and seemed kinda confusing if better the checks or $100 bills. Like you said, suggest.

Thanks.

there is a fee charged by the money changer for each cheque so it is usually a break-even or slightly less than cash. Best way is a wire transfer if you have Thai bank account and wire fairly large amount to spread over the wire fee. You usually get the best exchange rate. Negative is you are committed to what the exchange rate is one or two days from when you initiate it.

Remember that you have to pay for the checks, $2-3 each when you get them when you calculate the savings.

+1 I've brought in cash once in awhile myself and always try to have $100 bills. Travellers cheques aren't instant cash as such and as sceadugenga says, you will be paying. :jap:

Thank you everyone. Hate taking cash but seems the best route to get the best bang for the buck-$100 bills. I do not remember the bank name, not Bangkok bank, we get the best rate exchange there in Phayao. What is a bummer, later moving there, have to keep in Bangkok bank the required money to live there.
