A Shengen visa reads as follows :

Valid for Shengen States

From 20 July 2005 to 3 September 2005

Number of entries : 1

Duration of Stay : 30 days

Does it mean that the entry must be made between 20 July and 3 September and then from that date 30 days stay

Or does it mean that the 30 days duration of stay must fit within the 20 July to 3 September dates ?

You can stay for any 30-day period within the validity of the visa; i.e. even if you have not been in the country for 30 days, you would have to leave on 3 September.
