Esri Thailand Map 10

Featured Replies

Hi

Will get my CD with Thailand map from ESRI next week, i have a Garmin 1390T still 800mb free space, should i install the Thailand map on the unit or put it on a Micro SD card, i have a spare 2gb Micro card, i am not sure how big a file the new map is, or just plug it in the laptop and transfer from CD to unit?

Thanks.

ESRI Thailand Street Map, English language file, v10.0 is 115,232KB or v10.1 is 118,444KB. Easiest way is just put it on a microSD/SD card and slide the card in the memory card slot. If you are handy with a computer and want to play with the Garmin 1390T memory, then you can install the Thailand map file into the internal memory but you may have to delete a map depending on how many maps are installed now. It's up to you. I assume that you got the CD from ESRI or a dealer and it is unlocked to your unit.

Hi

Thanks interested Observer i knew i could count on you :)

I have the Europe map my unit came with when i bought it in Europe, i dont want to delete anything so i will put the Thai Map on the Micro card and then pop it in, my Thai Map i bought from ESRI, and they have my unit number so everything is after the book, as always ESRI is nice people to deal with, 2000 Baht and they will send the CD Monday, so i just copy and paste to the Micro Card?

Thanks.

Not quite so fast there:

1. On the microSD card create a folder named "Garmin", without the quotation marks.

2. From the CD open the English Language Map folder and transfer the map file named gmapprom.img to the Garmin folder on the microSD card.

3. Rename the transfered map file on the microSD card gmapsupp.img.

4. You are now ready to use the English Language Map file now renamed gmapsupp.img.

5. With the microSD/SD card loaded in the memory card slot, turn on the GPS. Go to tools>Settings>Map>Map Info. Both the Thai and European maps should be listed there, if needed deselect the European map and select the Thai map (both sections).

Backup everything first and don't try to load the ESRI map direct to GPS internal memory. You could automatically overwrite (delete) the European map.The microSD card and the Garmin nuvi will have a separate drive designation letters.

Again, thanks a lot

will let you know how it goes

For those interested, here are the names of Garmin nuvi map files:

Not all the map files can be used on the memory card.

  1. gmapsupp.img - maps you download, can be both internal and external on a SD card. This name is quite common, and it means you can copy it into your GPS internal memory or memory card.
  2. gmapprom.img - built in maps like City Navigator, only internal
  3. gmapprom1.img - built in extra maps, only internal. City Navigator EU and US need two files
  4. gmapbmap.img - base map file, can only be internal (on the GPS device)
  5. gmapoem.imb - OEM maps, only internally

Never had a locked map before, easy to get online free, and unlocked...

Much of the above do not apply to newer 4-digit Nuvi models such as TS's Nuvi1390T. With the newer models:

  1. \Garmin folder in internal memory no longer store any map (any IMG file placed here will not be recognized).
  2. Preloaded maps are stored in Nuvi:\.System folder which is a hidden system folder (will not appear in Windows Exporer with default settings).
  3. Multiple IMG maps are supported in both internal memory and data card. IMG map files need to be placed in \Map folder and they can be named anything as long as the IMG extension is used, ie. they can have more meaningful names such as Thailand.IMG, Malaysia.IMG, etc. By default this folder is not available in most (newer) Nuvis. Usually the folder is created if a map has been transfered from Mapsource. If the folder is not available in Nuvi or data card, just create a New Folder at the root directory and label it as Map.
  4. \Garmin folder in data card is still recognized as a map folder, but as with previous Nuvi models, only recognizes GMAPSUPP.IMG.

The advise provided HDRIDER is 100% correct for his microSD/SD memory card and will work with any nuvi model. He was cautioned not to enter the internal memory so comments about Garmin's newer memory configuration are not appropriate for him at this time. The Garmin nuvi map file names have not changed with the newer models, just their location.

Yeah, right. However below comment does not apply to this model.

The Thailand map file is named gmapprom.img and his already installed European map file will also be named gmapprom.img; you cannot have two map files named the same. The European map would automatically be overwritten (deleted) when entering the Thailand map. You could manually rename either map file or create a new folder named "Map" at the internal memory root level. Nobody has reported having installed more than three map files in their nuvi internal memory at the same time using the file names gmapprom.img and gmapsupp.img, newer Map folder models excluded.

The good thing about this newer models, there is little possibility that the preloaded maps would be overwritten (since they are now stored in a hidden system folder). Any transfered map excluding Garmin official update for preloaded map will be written into \Garmin or \Map folder, not \.System folder where the preloaded maps reside.

The 12xx,13xx & 14xx no longer require the gmapsup etc naming convention for map files. You can call them anything you like as long as the extension is .img and they reside in the folder named map. You can also have as many maps as your storage allows.
