Two Soldiers Killed in Clash with Insurgent Group in Yala

Security forces on patrol in the South clashed with an insurgent group in Yala, killing two soldiers.

A security unit clashed with a group of approximately 10 armed insurgents in the Bannangsta district of Yala province.

The soldiers were ambushed by insurgents and the ensuing firefight lasted for about 10 minutes.

As a result, six soldiers sustained injuries and were brought to a nearby hospital.

However, according to the latest report, two of the injured soldiers have already succumbed to their injuries and have passed away.

After the incident, the army forces along with a canine unit have closed off the area so that they can find and capture the fleeing insurgents.

Authorities believe that at least two of the insurgents were also injured in the clash.

All area medical facilities have been asked to keep their eyes out for any injured insurgents who might come in for treatment.

The investigation team stated that the ambush was undertaken by a group of newly recruited Runda Kumpulan Kecil or RKK terrorists, led by Mukta Aliama who are known to be active in the Bacho and Bannangsta districts.

Meanwhile, in the Nong Jik district, in Pattani province, security officials have inspected a suspicious car that was destroyed in a fire after having received intelligence reports that the insurgents are planning to use a similar type vehicle in the attack.

PM: Cabinet Likely to Extend Emergency Decree in Capital and Adjoining Provinces

The premier said the Emergency Decree is likely to be extended further in an effort to uphold peace and order.

PM Abhisit Vejjajiva, said, during his weekly program ‘Confidence in Thailand with PM Abhisit’, that he has tasked his deputy, Suthep Thaugsuban, with national security matters while he is away in Brussels attending the ASEM summit until October 6.

The emergency law was lifted in three provinces last week before it was set to expire.

They were --Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The state of emergency is still in effect in Bangkok, Sumut Prakarn, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani until October 6.

The Cabinet will decide whether to extend it TOMORROW.

Abhisit said the emergency decree is in force because of the frequent bombings and hints of potential disturbances.

He asserted that the emergency law is being enforced as a preventative measure and to provide security, not to violate the fundamental rights of the people.

The premier has instructed relevant agencies to investigate the cases of people being detained in the wake of the political violence in April and May to determine whether there was misuse of any laws.

He insisted that there is no hunt for political opponents as claimed by many.

He added that the robbery and arson cases must be investigated thoroughly.

He extended an invitation to the National Human Rights Commission, asking to have a open dialogue regarding this matter and the Rights and Liberties Protection Department to take care of the 184 detainees.

As for the 25 missing people, he said their going missing might not be directly linked to the political protest and that the Royal Thai Police will be investigating this matter.

Meanwhile, the prime minister added that during the ASEM summit he will have an unofficial meeting with Cambodian PM Hun Sen after they met in New York to further discuss border tensions.
