I would like to see the tough gentleman visit the bar in this clip:

I am sure a lot of people have seen this video before.

Please reserve the ICU at a hospital in your area.

Typical Cowardly SUCKER PUNCH and typical of a Thai to do that and then just like he did leg it. seen it too many times

Actually I think the odds are probably (broad sweeping generalization alert) only a little worse than most 'bad' neighborhoods in your own country. It's certainly not a guarantee that any action you make here will result in a vendetta (whether immediate or drawn out) type situation that will involve stabbing weapons or firearms or large groups of people injuring you/ending your life in a burning tire type deal.

Most of the murders are Thai on Thai crime so you probably don't have much to worry about if you mostly mind your own business and limit your outbursts to the 'gang' working at Au Bon Pain and not the one driving around the local 'ob bor tor' governor. Some may argue that the murder rate of foreigners is going up, but so is the foreign population. Some may feel that locals have a better read on 'place in hierarchy' for foreigners than they used to, and if you're in the same "class" as the local lowlifes, then you're probably not going to be given a pass. Same goes for any situation where you rub someone who is higher than you the wrong way, they know that there's a 94% chance that your most powerful connection is knowing some of the local internet forum moderators.

I think much of the disinformation, or rather dated information comes from the older generation of expats who were here when Thailand was around #3 or #4 in the world for a few years running for firearms (or was it murder in general) murder rate. Now we're much much lower. Top 20 at best. :)

:)

Hope you're right Heng.

I would never, ever dream of seriously annoying a Thai because the possible consequencies aren't worth it.

Mind you, if I ever saw ANYONE seriously attacking one of my dogs, I'd be out there (weaponless) going for their throat!

I'm just saying it's not black and white (blanket 'you should or you shouldn't'). There are going to be a lot of variables at play, just like anywhere else. Are the two people in question social equals? Is one at the end of their rope financially? Drunk? Habitual drug user? Habitually armed? Paranoid? Does this person think disputes end after we shove each other around for 10 minutes and the teacher blows her whistle or when I'm thrown into one of Dr. Pornthip's endless swamps of bodies? etc...

You're only in trouble when you make too many assumptions that the variables are going to be 'just like back home.' IMO that has probably resulted in a few guys getting in trouble (or worse) or on the other hand getting away with something that they most certainly wouldn't have gotten away with if you just changed a few variables... and then that's when all jump in trying to make generalizations one way or the other.

:)

I have confronted a Thai because he was throwing stones at my dog and trying to hit the dog with a piece of wood. This was in my village where i was known so no problems at all. I would not try the same thing in a bar with drunk people. I think it all depends on where and why. If my wife was being hit i would not care and would confront them, if some beer was spilled over me.. i could care less.

Most of the time i like to avoid confrontation because i always think of the consequences, what if you hit someone so hard and he ends up in a hospital. I don't want to do jailtime here. Or what if you dont hit hard enough and you get stabbed (that is what i worry about a lot not much you can do against a knife).

So why fight if its not important enough and you can avoid it.. i dont see the reason. .. just to show how tough you are. I'm not 18 anymore i don't need to show off like that.

My advice Sillyman - Real life is not like the Internet.

If your Thai foe here comes back and wipes you out you can't just log in and get another username.

Oh really, I was kinda hoping to tell him to read your posts, laugh.gif

It's noting to do with being scared, it's sheer weight of numbers and a complete disregard for life on behalf of the Thais. If you were on the receiving you could not expect any help from a Farang. It just does not happen.

The vast majority of Thais will back away from any confrontation. People who come out with nonsense like 'never confront a Thai or you'll be facing 20 of his friends with knives' probably spend most of their time in the nightlife areas where gangs of Thai men provide security and will of course rush in to support each other. In normal Thai society, that isn't the way disputes are resolved.

I've met a number of Thais that just didn't worry about the consequences of what they did.

Several Thai girls, who would cut you, but some guys as well.

When the other person is prepared to kill you for a minor disagreement, you can't beat them!

I almost never agree with you.. but those kind of people are the most dangerous people who don't care about the consequences of their actions.

Ummm yes. If I saw a friend of mine being attacked I'd be there in a moment! I might not be a lot of help, but I'd give everything I could to protect my friend.

This thread is getting to be really silly now and just stresses my point that farang's don't stick together.

Your sh!ttin me.

Aren't you a tough guy then.

What a nobbish thing to post.

PM me , I'll discus it with you in real life.

If you do meet up with this guy, is it alright if I come along too? Used to be a referee back in the 80s. But I do insist on queensbury rules.

I think and this is my honest to goodness well thought out and expert opinion, that a farang may back down from a Thai, not because he is afraid or cowardly, perish the thought that I should ever hint at such a thing, but because he would prefer to keep a low profile in Thailand and not become involved in any altercations which could mean having to deal with the police, name recorded and lots of agro. So in other words, the sensible thing to do is walk away which is better then getting caught up in the Thai joke legal system and criminal charges, the odds being that it would be worse for the farang.

This is what I would do, not because I`m sensible but I actually do descend from a long line of generations of cowards.
