KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- A Taliban district leader who was directly involved in the kidnapping of British New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell was captured in northern Afghanistan on early Tuesday, NATO said.

NATO said the Taliban district leader for the Chahar Darah district of Kunduz province was detained during an overnight operation in neighboring Takhar province. The alliance said the leader, who was not identified, was directly involved in the kidnapping of British New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell in September 2009.

NATO said the leader also maintained close ties with senior Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leadership in northern Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Days after Farrell was abducted in September 2009, he was rescued in a NATO operation that left his Afghan colleague Sultan Munadi killed. Two Afghan civilians and a British soldier were also killed.
