As my question asks, where can I find or get reliable koh samui tourist numbers based on

year vs year

month vs month

I'm sure I could look at TAT but it seems TAT has unreliable figures. some of you in other postings have put down information from other sources. any postings or website links would be useful. thanks

Hmm - as far as I know there is no simple way to find this out. There are various groups who would be able to compile accurate(ish) figures but they don't seem to make this info public.

The most accurate source would be Samui Immigration. They have totals (in theory!) of all aliens who are here and what visas they are on. Similarly the police collect info from each hotel every day - supposedly to give to Immigration. (But the mind boggles at the though of thousands of slips of paper each day 'being delivered' to immigration - my educated guess would be that the BIB collect these slips and stick them in a big black refuse bag back at the station. When the bag is full and they have not been asked or hassled about it they just sling it!)

Another element would be the passenger manifest of BKA - although these figures would be clouded by business flights and anyway doesn't give any indication of those coming here overland.

The Thai Hotels Association in BKK have all the occupancy returns from their members on Samui - but that's only around 70 of the bigger hotels/resorts, and these figures are not made public.

However, having talked yesterday to a member of Samui's branch of the THA, it would seem that Samui's influx of tourists this year is down (surprise) and by quite a lot. The peak was in 2004/5 after the tsunami, when there were 1.2+ mil tourists. Since then it has been dropping steadily each year and this guy's opinion is that Samui has now gone back to the sort of numbers it used to see pre-tsunami - around the 750,000 - 800,000 mark.

During which time there has been approx 20% more accommodation built each year .....

And where to find reliable information on road deaths, murders, and just about anything else?????? this is not a democratic country (even though the politicians say it is) and no press freedom so everything is hidden. Where's the Freedom of Information Act when you need one?:annoyed:

I suppose people could be hired to count people coming off all the ferries & planes!

This picture I took last week was a fully loaded Lomprayah ferry coming from BKK / KT & KP....

One wonders where they all end up?.... and that is just one ferry load.... I was surprised being the time of year .... & not even Full Moon Party time!

A tour guide friend says there are a lot of Chinese here at the moment, another friend that manages a high end resort says they are almost full...

I guess these types of travelers are not ones to venture out to bars or restaurants much.....<_<

Have a look at the Samui Gazette, issue 3 or 4, not sure.they had an article about tourist numbers on Samui versus Phuket. It was a fairly comprehensive report covering several tourists countries of origin & so on. They had all the breakdown

Ok It's issue # 5,

Article heading:

Slow times?

Economic reality of Samui vs Phuket.
