I am planning to go on land travel from BKK to Singapore. Any suggestions what's the best thing to do that? Train or bus will do. I've read from diff. websites that there are so many options, it just made me confused.

So the best thing is to ask people directly through forum.

Thanks.

I am fan of overland travel on BKK-SIN route and I have some experience. If you do not have time and you just want to save money, there are better ways(promotion on AirAsia).

I can suggest you going one way by bus to Satun, then by ferry to Langkawi and Penang and by bus through KL to Singapore. On the way back take sleeper on train from

Singapore to KotaBaru and after crossing border you have a choice:direct bus to BKK or train or some interesting stop on the way.

As I much prefer train to bus,.Apart from anything else you see so much more of the world by train. And you get to interact with lots of other people. If you have the time, go by sleeper train from Bkk. to Sin .I always used to travel 2nd class, non air,as the nights are generally quite cool. outside of Bkk.You could choose to have a layover in Hat Yai or Penang (or both).I like Penang for its Indian food.Excellent. On to K.L.and thence to Sin. If you have the time , you can return via Kota Baru. (check if this train still runs) You go from Sin. To GEMAS,changing trains there, to Kota Baru. A very short bus trip, takes you into Thailand at Sungai Golok, where you can get the train to Bkk..You can take 1st class sleepers, if you like. And for a wonderful experience, albeit VERY expensive ,you can go from Bkk. to Sin. on the Orient Express. A web site you might enjoy , is "The Man In Seat 61" Very informative.Happy travelling.

thanks for the reply, fantuzi and afarang :)

have anyone tried this route?

BKK--Butterworth-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore

Do you think it's much cheaper than going different route? or maybe more comfortable since you are travelling through trains.

That Satun route is interesting though, then riding a ferry to Penang, that's great adventure :)

That is the first way I wrote about.More comfortable, yes.Price? I don't know.More fun? Yes ,Get to talk to lots of different people.See how the countryside changes,etc..

The ferry sounds interesting, but I don't know the mechanics of it.

I traveled this routes. There is town down south called Hatyai, which is sort of hub.Airport, train junction and road connections. You have to pass through it going down south, whatever way,and you can switch there

different mode of your transport(train to Butterworth or KL;minibus to Penang, train to SungaiGolok,or bus up to Singapore,if you wish)).

If you are interested to go by ferry, you can go to Satun from Hatyai(1.5 hour),but you may take direct bus from BKK there(South Bus Terminal in BKK).

From Satun you have ferry 3 times daily(9am1pm4or5pm) to Langkawi, not expensive(300B?) from terminal, which is out of town, called Tamalang Pier, with immigration office.

After 1-2 hours you will land in Langkawi in Kua,from there you can catch ferry to Penang(4 hours, many departures all day),you can make break there, island is big with beaches and plenty of hotels.

Penang is nice place to see, similar to Singapore 30yrs ago. From there ride by bus or train to KL(during day - nice views on the way).train is slow, bus is fast.

If you go from Hatyai to Butterworth(train station for Penang) or Penang by bus/minibus or train it is pretty boring and not much faster(train is slow, long stop for immigration)) - then ferry.

From Butterworth there is train up to Singapore.Butterworth is the last stop of BKK train.

From Sigapore you can take direct night train to KotaBahru, which doesnt go through KL,you have to mind, that train stations in KotaBahru have different names, then town itself.

Tickets for train are cheaper in Malaysia, they costs the same - but you pay in Sing$ or Mal.$ and it makes difference by more then 2 times!

If you want something special - take bus "Aeroline" from KL to Singapore,it is special service from Corus hotel in KL ,bus in airliner style, with airline style meals and Senheiser sound system,

it is not OrientExpress, but really nice and fast.it goes through new border crossing into Singapore(Tuas),old oneCauseway) in JohorBahru can be really messy.

Coming from KotaBahru to Thailand will be more complicated, cause you have to cross border perpedes, but you have choice of two places,if you go to SongoiGolok, you can board there train or bus up to BKK.

bus is much faster(but long ride 16hours?) cause it goes by new highway far from Hatyai. You can take local train to Hatyai only, passing through infamous stations like - Yala, which look very sleepy indeed.

I remember, that getting seat on good bus from BKK to SongoiGolok was a problem(booked-out).Hatyai? you can try night life if you like;or give it a pass.

It is all much longer, then flight but you will see it all, much more then from airplane window. In Penang stay in Cathay Hotel.

Have a nice time!
