Pink Floyd Fans In Bangkok

Pink Floyd fans meet up on the first Saturday of every month in Bangkok, full details of this can be found at:

This months meet up has been cancelled due to lack of support, so hopefully it will go ahead January 3rd 2004.

It seems there are a few Floyd fans among us, P1P I see has posted a Roger Waters lyric, although sorry to be a pedant P1P it should read;

Thank you for the note about the Floyd fan meeting. I?m afraid I live in Chiang Mai and go, kicking and screaming, to Bangkok approximately two times in every three or four years. Then it is only for business reasons and I normally drive there and back same day...

Regarding the lyric. I am holding my original, 1977 (vinyl) record cover where the lyric for Pigs on the Wing (Part One) is reproduced as "didn't care", not "don't".

I?m afraid I do not know if Waters re-recorded with a changed lyric; however I have checked with several on-line compendiums of song lyrics and discovered other variations too. (Hence I hunted out the original album!)

Probably time to move on now. The band never looked back after Waters left, so maybe I should look to something different.

i've been a big fan since the early days, and although i would jump at the chance to see them live, either as pink floyd or as the (far superior imho) roger waters line up, i'm not sure if i would want to meet up and talk about the meaning of lyrics and pink floyd trivia with like minded folk. i just listen to the music a lot and it never really ages or loses its appeal to me.

but just in case i get a severe case of nostalgia, where do these meets take place.

any neil young or frank zappa fans out there??

First saw the Floyd back in Syd?s day when they played Devizes Corn exchange. Had to place a special order for both Piper and Saucer, although the local shop stocked Atom Heart Mother when it came out.

If they were to play Bangkok. . . Well, I fear my reservations regarding the metropolis would be dispersed in a flash of lazed lighting effects.

With or without Waters?? Here I?m afraid we have to agree to differ. The Floyd still have Dave G, one of the greatest guitarists ever to pluck a string. Rick Wright makes the keyboards stand up and scream and Nick has always had more feeling for the drum kit than almost any other. Whether Dave or Rick have Roger?s dulcet tones is subject to debate but his bass is not missed when Chico et al are available to step in.

Listen closely to the Waters work since he left the Floyd. You will note that the lead guitar is sadly lacking. It is reported he will not allow it because of the bad blood between himself and Dave G.. IMHO this leaves much to be desired when you compare original Floyd numbers with Waters and current Floyd renditions, which have, if anything, matured somewhat from the originals.

Neil Young – Absolutely great, you remember 4 Way Street, with Crosby, Still & Nash ?

Two of my favorites by Neil are “Southern Man” & “Cow Girls in the Sand”, the long versions, of course, but the again he made so many good songs.

Did you ever see the live concert on T.V. where he and Bob Dylan, George Harrison (R.I.P.), also, me think, Tom Petty and Eric from the Cream sang all together ? Love to have that on DVD. B.D. 60th Birthday Concert me think.

Only have about 30 of B.D’s ablums, My all time favorite Album still is “Self Portrait” singing “Blue Moon”. Lovely. But then again he made so many great songs which most groups or singers sang. Which reminds me of “I really enjoyed the Rolling Stones singing “Just Like a Rolling Stone” by B.D. Mick even thank B.D at the end.””

On the subject of Groups, just to mention a few that I still listen to, but gone forever, Yes, Golden Ear Ring, Joe Cocker, “Jethro O’Toole (sorry if my spelling is wrong) Aqualung and Locomotive great songs by Ian Anderson”, Love his flute paying on one leg. And many more underground Groups and Singers in those days.

And then “Santana” still going Great

But the one thing that I really ENJOY is listening to music on my own, because then I can play it very loud.

Other notable groups, yes, Ian Anderson's Jethro Tull was excellent. For something to hallucinate or stone out to, there were always the Tangs, (Tangerine Dream).

We should never forget the Beatles. I cried when Mark Chapman shot Lennon.

Heard a nice quote regarding Queen the other day. "Freddie Mercury had more talent in his little finger than all of the lead singers who followed him put together." He was a truly amazing showman.

Genesis are another stunning band, both with and without Peter Gabriel. Could go on - and on - and on with this subject.

Simply do not have the time to listen any more although I am over the moon that my kids are growing up with a genuine appreciation for good sounds. My four and five year olds know the words and sing along with many different numbers from Scorpions, Floyd, Santana, Tony Joe White, Dire Straits and several others.

Don’t want to put too much of a damper on your enthusiasm, but one of the reasons these artists were so creative was because they were rebelling against the conservatism of their parents, with their love of Glen Miller, Mat Munroe, Edmundo Ross or, that lack of talent, Frank Sinatra, when times and events were rapidly changing. Times that rebelled against conservatism especially displayed in music.

We are the parents now and if we could be honest, we ought to realise our music is no more or less relevant today than our parent’s is to us.

My own eldest son, who could hum the same tunes as your son at his age, is a musician today. He plays drums in a Grunge band that makes Mettallica sound like a church choir.

I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan too, best album Blood on the Tracks and the Anthology stuff, I used to reckon Blonde On Blonde was the best, but I played it to death. Jethro Tull, all great stuff, especially Thick as a Brick.

A few underated masterpieces; Songs for Beginners: Graham Nash and Underwater Moonlight by the Soft Boys.

I haven't bought a modern CD release for years, I bought a Paul Weller CD about five or six years ago but I think it's disappeared.

One of these days I'll transport all my vinyl over from the U.K. but probably bit by bit by air because they are so heavy.

P1P, yes I will double check the lyric again, I haven't got the CD today (Animals) but I'll listen tomorrow, I'm sure I'm right, but if you have the LP there have you listened?

plenty of stuff from just a few years ago is unlistenable now, because it was no good in the first place. but lots of music gets better the more times you hear it.

Moody Blues were great a few weeks ago in Ft Myers Florida.

I was going to fly to "brighton england" to see them a few years ago after seeing them do the Red Rocks concert and then in Ft Lauderdale, but a friend told me I would probably hate the place ( January) ( I hate cold weather) so I passed.

Pink Floyd would be interesting. Never saw them in concert, but how in the world to see them without orange sunshine and would it even be possible to do Ummagumma ( oops bad spelling)?

All my worst suspicions about Mr V are fully confirmed now he's come out with his penchant for the Moody Blues. I mean, you can just picture him in his 70s suit and long hair, looking like something out of Starsky & Hutch queuing up to see the Blues with his boyfriend, eh? while fastidiously saving his concert ticket and sticking it in his album along with others like Barry Manilow and the Bee Gees. Kan, I think you'll find it was "Careful with that axe Eugene". (Beware, pedant at work......Classic album, that one back in the days when Syd's input was still strong, if not wholly sane.........."I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like, it's got a basket, a bell, and things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if i could, but I borrowed it"..........And enjoy the "Wish you were here" chords over Xmas, mate, classic stuff.

Any time mate! You should stop drinking that Chang stuff - far too much formalin - and your memory will return overnight. Well, gradually, depending on what you replace it with. I'm still crying into my Kloster about the sad demise of Black Tiger and Amarit. Another update from alert readers about their wherabouts would be appreciated.

PS Kan, if you equate axes, with choppers, with porking swords, then indeed, you do have to watch out for it and be careful at the same time where you bury it - esp. if your wife is not on the receiving end. Thai women, as we all know can be quite handy with meat cleavers, when chopper envy sets in!
