At least 5 Pakistani soldiers killed in Taliban attack

2010-10-16 00:08:22 GMT+7 (ICT)

PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least five Pakistani soldiers were killed on Friday when suspected members of the Taliban attacked a military post in the northwest region of the country, near the Afghan border, officials said.

Security officials have confirmed the attack, which occurred in an isolated mountainous area in South Waziristan, which is known to be a Tehreek-e-Taliban region.

Few details were immediately released about the attack, which killed at least five Pakistani soldiers. A sixth soldier was reported missing, but it was not immediately clear if he had been killed or possibly kidnapped.

After the attack on Friday, security forces conducted counter operations in the region, killing an unknown number of suspected Taliban militants.

Hours earlier, a U.S. drone attack killed at least four militants in North Waziristan. In September, over 20 U.S. drone strikes were carried out in Pakistan. This month, 16 drone strikes have already been conducted.
