One killed after Highway Patrol helicopter crashes in eastern Missouri

2010-10-16 00:38:15 GMT+7 (ICT)

CLARKSON VALLEY, MISSOURI (BNO NEWS) -- One person was killed on late Friday morning when a Highway Patrol helicopter crashed in a neighborhood in eastern Missouri, federal officials said.

The Bell 206B rotorcraft crashed on a street in the city of Clarkson Valley, in St. Louis County, at around 11 a.m. CDT. Footage from the scene showed a heavily damaged aircraft but did not indicate that the aircraft hit anything else as it came down on the street.

The pilot of the helicopter, who was the only person on board, received fatal injuries as a result of the crash, according to Elizabeth Isham Cory, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Cory said the 1981-build helicopter had departed Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield before the crash but said its destination was not immediately known.

Both the FAA as well as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the accident.
