Kosovo prepares for February presidential election

2010-10-16 10:23:52 GMT+7 (ICT)

PRISTINA, KOSOVO (BNO NEWS) -- Kosovo's caretaker president Jakup Krasniqi on Friday announced that the Balkan country is set for an early presidential election in February after the untimely resignation of President Fatmir Sejdiu, the Koha Ditore daily reported.

Krasniqi called for an early parliamentary election which has been scheduled for February 13, 2011. The decision was made after Sejdiu resigned after violating the country's constitution.

Sejdiu breached Kosovo's constitution by holding office as president and the leadership of his party, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), at the same time. He submitted his resignation after learning the court ruling.

The caretaker president also said that the matter was decided to deal with political parties and the Central Election Commission. Such commission will be in charge of taking the necessary steps for organizing the February elections.

Kosovo is in the midst of controversy as Serbia still does not recognize Kosovo as an independent state despite many countries and international agencies having done so.

The vote will be the first general election since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. In Kosovo, ethnic Albanians outnumber ethnic Serbs and other minorities by about nine to one.
