Khon Kaen designated to be regional centre for IT, logistics

BANGKOK: -- Khon Kaen, the main gateway to the country's northeastern region, has been designated as an information and communications technology (ICT) and logistics centre to support the development of the region.

Given its geographic advantage, the Northeast had high potential for economic development as a commercial hub linking to Indochina and points farther east, said Suvit Khunkitti, the Information and Communications Technology minister.

Mr Suvit made the comments at a seminar titled ''Khon Kaen's Great Economic Opportunity'' held yesterday by Post Today, the Thai-language newspaper of Post Publishing Plc.

As a key agricultural production area for exports, the northeast region already has good infrastructure such as road and telecommunications networks to support various development projects.

Mr Suvit said that further development would require the support of ICT systems and logistics management in which Khon Kaen, with its geographical and economical advantage, had strong potential.

In fact, he said, the northeastern provinces had shown potential to develop human resources in IT and modern logistics infrastructure.

He cited the ''miracle'' performance by the Nai Hoi Tamin team from Sawang Daendin Vocational College in Sakhon Nakhon province, which beat a Bangkok team and strong competitors from 19 countries to win ABU Robocon, the Asia-Pacific robot contest, in 2003.

In logistics development, the government aimed to develop Khon Kaen as one-stop service centre for goods distribution, with an inland container depot among the projects planned, the minister said.
