As of Thursday, at least 44 people - most of them children - have died in what is being described as an outbreak of diarrhea and vomiting. Some 200 others are being treated at area hospitals with similar symptons. Health officials have said it was too early to speak of an epidemic, but said it is not yet clear what caused the outbreak. Tests are being carried out to determine if it is cholera, typhoid or another disease. Foreign media reports indicated that the death toll was as high as 135, but officials in Haiti did not immediately confirm that. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2010-10-22
