Indonesia says Papuan torture video is authentic

2010-10-22 19:24:43 GMT+7 (ICT)

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesian authorities on Friday said the torture video against two residents of Papua is authentic and shows members of the country's military, officials said.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto confirmed the news, saying that initial reports have demonstrated that Indonesian soldiers took "excessive and unprofessional" action against Papuan men, reportedly members of a separatist group.

"As there has been excessive and unprofessional action by the soldiers, there will be certain sanctions imposed on them," Suyanto said, adding that the soldiers had already been taken into custody.

Last week, the video began appearing on several websites, stirring international media outlets and outraging communities around the world, after initially being uploaded by the Asian Human Rights Commission, which is based in Hong Kong.

The leaked video shows low-quality footage of six men in military uniforms torturing two Papuan villagers by burning their genitals, threatening them with guns, placing knives in their faces and necks, and even using a cigar as a weapon or threat. Even though it has been claimed that they belong to separatist groups, locals say they are only villagers in the area.

During the 10-minute video, which made its way on to YouTube before being taken down on Monday, the soldiers are violently questioning the men about their connection with rebel groups as they are constantly kicked and abused.

The incident reportedly occurred last May, in the Punjak Jaya region of Papua. A strong military presence has been established in the eastern region as separatist insurgency has developed for decades.
