Thai Wife With Thai And Usa Passports

Recommended Posts

I am an American. My wife is Thai (we were married in the USA). I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and we have been married for 18 months. In about two years my wife will be eligible for US citizenship.

My questions:

When my wife and I travel back and forth between Bangkok and the USA what passport should she use while exiting and entering Thailand?

At the airline check-in desk at BKK they will want to see her 'validity' for entering the USA...since she will have a USA passport her Thai passport will not have a visa nor an attached 'green card'. Should she use her USA passport at the airline check-in and then use her Thai passport at the Thai immigration desk?

Coming back to Thailand should she just use her Thai passport? I mean she does not want to get a tourist visa (30 day) in her new American passport.

Does Thailand recognize dual citizenships?

My Non-Imm status hinges on my having a Thai wife. Does my staus change when she becomes a US citizen?

I am sure that these questions have been raised by any farang whose Thai spouse becomes a citizen of the other's home country.

Thanks for your help.

this has been covered often.do a search.

My wife is dual citizen (Aussie/Thai).Both Australia and Thailand allow this duality.I dont know USA law, I believe USA does not allow dual citizenship.

This is how my wife operates her 2 passports :

When she enters and exits thai border posts she uses her thai passport.

When she enters and exits border posts of all other nations, she uses her Aussie passport.

Remains one point, at check in, airline staff might want to see both p/ports to show that exit from and entry into the country is ok.

Absolutely correct Axel.

Thanking both of you: This means that we should have no problems going back and forth (USA - Thailand) with her new passport status (her with Thai and USA passports) and me with a Thai visa in my USA passport (Non-Imm, married to Thai wife)?

I love this forum.

We have a Thai friend (girl) who is maried to an American and she now has a US passport (being a recent US citicen) AND a Thai passport. She has not been back to Thailand since she got her US citizenship. She now has a child (born in the USA) with her USA husband. She wants to visit Thailand next month with this new child. She wants to come and go from Thailand/USA with a minimum of fuss. Do you see any problems?

I told her that her kid can have a USA passport throughout and that she can use her Thai passport coming into BKK and the USA one going out (at least at the airport check in...but she should use the Thai one through the Thai immigration exit).

The only problem I can see is a real bad airline check in person saying child can not board without a visa if the travel is over 30 days and only has US passport. I would get a tourist visa for the child just in case.

And please don't use the "use Thai to enter and US to exit" phrase!!! You understand it but many readers may not. You always use the passport of the country involved to enter/leave. If proof of visa needed then you use other country passport (as I know you know). :o
