David006
We just came back from a border run to Malaysia...on the way back we diverted to a beach to grab a meal and a beer..I won't name the beach but there are great glamorous signs for it north of Satun... Drove into beach area and we were surrounded by wrecked buildings goats and buffalo...nothing..no shops or cafes..at beach..EXCEPT a large relatively new( about 20x10 meter) raised concrete sort of promenade area all decorated tiles/wall and floor plus fancy stainless steel rails.no seats or tables...must have cost a million or so to build!!..all in the middle of wrecked buildings and sand .plus a bunch of goats and buffalo....totally deserted otherwise!! Okay there were a few dilapidated homes and some new shop houses on the approach road but the population could only have been less than a thousand.... Makes one wonder how often this is repeated along the affected more isolated parts of the coast...very disappointing use of funds to say the least! geriatrickid
Oh you visited one of the governments rural development projects. This is how the hearts and minds of the vassels shall be won. They shall be given structures. At these structures they can gather and give praise to the government that has shared the nation's bounty. Rejoice. Rejoice for they are included................ jubby
with almost 70% of the population being Muslim and also the Southern Violence thing. Its hardly likely to be a buzzing Holiday destination. Its still a shame though. I do like that Stainless steel rail stuff

When you look at all the development along the relatively small area on either side of the penninsula from Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Pha Ngan in the Gulf of Thailand on the east, and the Andaman sea between Krabi, Phuket and Khao Lak on the west, then compare it to places near the Malaysian border where all the Muslim problems, exist then you get a better understanding
