Entrapment

Featured Replies

Friends,

A question on the two following sentences and my initial translation:

________________________________

หลังจากนักวิชาการแสดงความเห็นแล้วก็จะนำไปสู่กระบวนการคัดสรรเพื่อให้ไปแสดงบทบาทในฐานะพยาน เป็นพยานในเชิงวิชาการ

After the expert expressed his opinion, he would become subject to a selection process to demonstrate his [ability] to pose as a witness, that is, to be [a credible] expert witness.

แต่พอ นายวิรัช ร่มเย็น ส.ส.ระนองพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ กลายเป็นถูกล่อเข้าไปติดกับ ทุกอย่างเลยเป็นตรงกันข้าม

However, once Mr. Wichai Romyen, the Democratic representative from Ranong, was deceived and became entrapped, everything was turned upside down.

________________________________

The question is regarding the phrase "กลายเป็นถูกล่อเข้าไปติดกับ" and the verb which are incorporated in the phrase. I believe that "กลายเป็น" is a unitary phrase meaning "was" or "become". Then, "เป็นถูกล่อเข้าไปติดกับ". If เป็น is part of this phrase, then, it might be implied that Wichai is a victim, like a victim of a disease. "ถูก" seems to be a passive voice auxiliary and the entire phrase "ถูกล่อเข้าไปติดกับ" would mean "was deceived and entrapped" in a passive construction. Am I understanding these sentences correctly?

Thank you.

กลาย is changed เป็น is the current state of affairs ie.what he changed into= ถูกล่อเข้าไปกับ, could it be a compound noun?, 'took the bait go in with'. what about 'became one of them' ? Probably there are enough changelings to merit a noun. I don't think of trapped really when a politician is induced to change sides, always assuming that is what happened, I don't know any politics; not good for the digestion.

tgeezer, take note that กับ here is not the conjunction 'with', but a noun 'trap, snare'. ติดกับ means 'stuck in a trap', or as David put it, 'entrapped'.

That is what gave me the idea; ending with a conjunction is so wrong that it has to be something from 'left field'. Its only a suggestion, I hadn't noticed that there was a noun กับ actually, thanks.

So the its ok, just the problem with กลาย but that can be solved by imagining a person who has been induced. เป็นคนที่...
