HEALTH CAMPAIGN: Women who smoke are a turn-off: men

BANGKOK: -- Most Thai men prefer not to give their hearts to women who smoke, because they believe it looks bad for females to puff cigarettes. So say the findings of a recent survey conducted by Assumption University, or Abac Poll.

The poll’s director, Noppadol Kannikar, said yesterday that 75.5 per cent of male respondents said they would not pick female smokers as girlfriends. Of the rest, 19.4 per cent were unsure whether they would do so and only 5.1 per cent said they were willing to make women smokers their partners.

Noppadol unveiled the survey findings at the launch of a campaign called “New Generation Women Don’t Smoke”, by the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation.

Apart from partnership with a woman smoker, the survey found that sentiments against female smokers persisted in Thai society. Nearly half of respondents said they felt it unacceptable for women to smoke, and up to 72.4 per cent condemned female smokers under the age of 20.

The survey covered 661 respondents in Bangkok aged between 15 and 30.

Noppadol said his office had also gathered information from 419 female smokers in Bangkok in the same age group.

He said the female respondents claimed they were driven to cigarettes by stress, worries, testiness and friends.

Of them, 62.8 per cent said their parents or older relatives had rebuked them for smoking. Among those with boyfriends or husbands, more than half said their partners had complained about their smoking habit.

When asked whether they would give up smoking, 68.4 per cent of the women smokers said they wanted to stop. However, many admitted that past efforts to quit had failed.

Dr Prakit Vateesatogkit, executive secretary of the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation, said his foundation and other anti-smoking activists would continue to try to persuade smokers to quit.

“We are launching a campaign especially for female smokers because their emotions have apparently played an active role in their decisions to smoke. You will find it different among male smokers,” he said.

Prakit added that the “New Generation Women Don’t Smoke” campaign would recruit outstanding women as presenters. These high-profile figures will include the deputy director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, Khunying Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand, MP Janista Liewchalermwong and Miss Thailand Universe 2004, Morakot Kittisara.
