Need Help Have A Question About A Connecting Flight Through Narita Airport On Way To Bangkok

As my Topic title says I need help I have a question about connecting flight through Narita Airport on way to Bangkok. The reason I am asking this question is due to a friend is coming to visit me from the USA but has never flown overseas before and he has a connecting flight through narita airport to do and only has 90 minutes to do security check and get to gate. The airline is american airlines. Then from narita to bangkok its japan airlines

The last time I had to do a connecting flight through narita airport on the way to bangkok was 4 years ago and my experience was ok barely had enough time to make it to my next flight. When I arrived at narita airport with american airlines I got off the plane, walked down a little bit then I have to go through a long security line which took 40 minutes, then I had to find the gate for my next flight which required me to go from terminal 1 to terminal 2. by the time I got to terminal 2 and found my gate the plane was boarding. Talk about having fun. Anyways

My questions are:

1. Any of you this year or last year have to do a connecting flight through narita airport on the way to bangkok?

2. If so, Have they changed anything making it easier to get through that long line for security check point before going into terminal 1 area.

3. In the narita airport departure area inside the terminal, do they still have the signs pointing to the skytrain saying to Terminal 1 to Terminal2

I would like to hear any of your experiences on your connecting flight in narita airport through security finding gate etc. Lately I've given my friend lots of photos and details on what he'll need to do and might experience

I came through NRT a month ago, United to United, so was a tad easier finding the next gate.

Security check, about 30 minutes as a couple of other planes must have arrived about the same time.

Either just before the security check or just afterwards, there was a display of ongoing flights so need to check there for his AA gate arrival and ongoing JAL flight.

Do a google for: narita airport, aa to jal

Looks like it's a code share flight & connection so might be easy, same gate area. Lots of hits for that Q.

No idea about a train to change terminals as I didn't have to do it.

Well, I have only flown United, with similar connecting times, and never had a problem. If your friend flying business class (theres a special cue at least for united) he can also request a seat at the front of the plane to decrease the chances of a long line. For connecting flights security is not as rigid as well. Also, chances are there will be many people on his flight making the same connection so the airlines will hold the plane within reason to accommodate those travelers.

I flew on a connecting flight a few months ago. Two different airlines. And we were really late. Had less than 30 minutes till our flight. We were moved to biz class for the landing and then a rep from the airline met us upon arrival and took us to the gate for the next flight. Tell your friend not to worry. 90 minutes is plenty of time...just follow the signs and if unsure, ask somebody! Plenty of people around to get help from. We do this flight twice a year, mostly connecting on different airlines and usually have 90 minutes or less. Narita is a huge airport, but fairly easy to get around.

Can you give us the exact flight numbers?

Both AA and JL operate out of Terminal 2. (OneWorld and Star Alliance partners were re-aligned into T2 and T1 respectively a few years ago.)

Based on recent information, AA flights will arrive Terminal 2 Main Building (gates 72 and 73), while the JL flight will depart Terminal 2, Satellite Building (gates 80-ish). A 90 minute connection should be fine, and quite straight-forward. No need to confuse your friend with different terminals.
