Hi

A friend based in Europe and in the scrap recycling business is seriously thinking of committing an investment to set up a scrap recycling business here in LOS. His idea is to ship loads of metal scrap, compressors, copper, steel, alumunium, elctric motors, circuit breakers, transformers etc here, do the dismantling, grading etc here.. and sell them to local foundries/mills/manufacturers.. He says that it is big business over there, and he would like to expand here.

So far, i've haven't seen any posts on recycling topics here in Thailand, and any leads would really be appreciated... such as links to recylers, associations, or even forums where I could get info... I would like to check out the scene before giving him the go ahead. I've tried Google, and very few leads.. there seems to be a lot going in China and India, but nothing much on the Thai front..

thanks

Recycling business is interesting but is not picking up here yet. The main reason may be because few people know how to do it.

In my view, it means less competition.

Right now, one company dominates industrial recycling: Genco (http://www.genco.co.th), coincidentally (or maybe not) the name of (Mario Puzo's) "the Godfather's" first front company. *hint hint... waste management, nudge*

But there are plenty of people doing it on a smaller scale who are doing quite well. It's on the list of things I want to do, but don't have time for yet.

Are they not considering a law banning foreign waste being sent here after lots of containers of old batteries turned up from Japan?

Thank you all for your input...

Batteries are more on the poisonous side.. This fellow is into ferrous/non ferrous scrap and its not a safey hazzard.

Thanks for the Genco link, its down and I'll try again later on.. I'd like to find out what the local prices are for scrap material. I've approached a few of the scrap dealers around, and they don't seem very keen on giving information on who their buyers are.. I wouldn't mind dealing with them buy they all seem to be small dealers and I'm not too sure if they are are really in any way upto buying large scale.. Does anyone know who buys from these small scale dealers?.. I wonder if there is any chance of dealing with the mills/smelters/foundries directly..

Any input will be much appreciated...

cheers
