British Passport Renewal Fee Payment

Hi all,

Firstly apologises to the administrators if this post is in the wrong place but was not sure where to put. Its passport related but also regarding banking.

I am renewing my British passport at the Embassy in Hong Kong and in the section regarding payment they say you can either send a 'credit card authorisation form' or a bankers draft. Now I wont try the credit card as all I have is a Bangkok Bank visa/debit card and I have heard stories about that not being accepted so I am going to try the bankers draft.

So my question to anyone is has anyone done this recently and if so which bank did you use ? I only ask as on the website they mention that you have to make sure 'Standard Chartered' in Hong Kong accepts the bankers draft from the bank you are using.

Also how easy was it and the charge (if any) ?

Before I go running around the banks in Pattaya and battling with the usual language barrier, inconsistent rules and the famous 'cannot' and 'not have' lines etc etc I thought I would see if anyone here has any experience ?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Your in Pattaya but its easier to put yourself through the problems you mention above rather than do it in Bangkok ? Just curious :)

You can't do it in Bangkok any more. You have to send off to Hong Kong for passport renewals.

I did this a month or so ago and to be honest with you if you can find someone with a credit card and borrow the use of it it will be a lot easier for you. I like yourself only had a visa / debit card and wanted to try and get an international bankers draft. I went to my local bank where I do all my stuff and the woman knows me and asked her about it and obviously she had never heard of it and didn't know what I was talking about. This wasn't a cashier either but someone whose job it is to send money abroad !

Anyway after this I decided to try and find someone with a credit card. I used my wife's sister's husband's sister's credit card but it could be anyone. A family member or a friend in your home country would be fine. There are a few details they have to fill in on the form but nothing they actually have to sign so you could it yourself.

The good news from this though is that after I found a DHL office close by to send it off to Hong Kong I actually got it back in one week. I found the service very efficient as I had been expecting a month. I might have been lucky though. Who knows. Also, if you are doing more than one passport you can put them in the same envelope and that will save on the courier fees. Good luck.

I would rewrite the heading as "how to get a bank draft" etc and put this in the banking topics where you might find more expertise.

i did this only last Friday and received my passport back this morning. will go into that a little later on in my post, might be worth remembering for some of you guys who have to go through the process in the future.

anyway got all the paperwork together, plus photos and headed off to prom phong on the bts. went into bank of autthaya first and they didn't have a clue what i was going on about so, decided to try kasikorn bank. no problems ! bankers draft made out to the British consulate - general Hong Kong. amount 1,600 HK dollars. total cost 6, 421 baht including 200 baht fee and 3 baht stamp duty.

a reminder to all though that it does say on the official guideline sheet issued by the embassy, not to deal with krung thai bank seeing as the payment will be rejected for some reason when the application is processed in HK.

then across the road to the emporium, 4th floor DHL counter. every things already set out for you and the girl behind the counter seems to know exactly what shes doing. looks like they deal with this sort of thing on a regular basis. payed my 962 baht fee for the courier service, kissed the envelope and prayed as i have read many a story about how things can go wrong and people waiting an extremely long time to receive their new passports back.

o.k so now onto how i luckily got my new passport back in such a short period of time. like i said, i have read many a story about how things have gone a bit pear shaped since they bought this new system in and seeing as in my case time was of the essence as my visa is soon to run out and not having enough room in my existing passport for new extension stamps/ re -entry stamps and visas from other countries ( yes i know my own fault and shouldn't have left it until the last minute ). plus the fact that i begrudge paying over stay fees of 500 baht a day and didn't fancy hanging on the line to wait for some <deleted> probably working out of India or Bangladesh at 0.69 pence a minute to then tell me after trying to explain my circumstances that there is nothing they can do for me. i decided to try and take the bull by the horns and see if i could speed the the process up by trying to set the wheels in motion so to speak.

first though about going on the two websites, then thought sod that ! waste of time and effort. then thought about trying to get in contact with the embassy in bangkok. again thought sod that, they are about as much use as a fart in a paper bag. total waste of tax payers money if you want my honest opinion. so i did a bit of digging around and suddenly remembered seeing the telephone number for the British consulate in Hong Kong printed on the DHL receipt that i got when i payed for the courier service.

so, got on the blower !

phone answered after two rings, embassy in bkk take note ! spoke to a very nice lady who then connected me to the relevant department . again phone answered after one ring, again bkk take note ! spoke to a very nice chap and explained my circumstances. the guy then asked my name and confirmed they had received my application only on monday, then asked me when i needed the new passport back by ? said it would be great if i could get it back before friday as that is when my visa expires, but fully understood if it took a while longer,as i know that they are extremely busy and that i was only calling to see if anything could be done. with that he said, he would see what he could do. couldn't ask for more than that and proceeded to thank him for his time and understanding.

low and behold this morning as i was just pottering about outside the little guy in in his DHL uniform rolls up on his motorbike with package in hand and asks me to sign. open it up and theres my brand new spanking British passport. biggrin.gif
