Israel cancels special strategic dialogue with UK

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL (BNO NEWS) -- Israel on Wednesday canceled the special strategic dialog with the United Kingdom as a protest towards a law that enables British law enforcement forces to arrest visiting Israeli officials over alleged war crimes.

According to local media, the British universal jurisdiction allows judges to issue arrest warrants for any visitor accused of war crimes anywhere in the world. The announcement was made during the two-day visit to the region by UK Foreign Secretary William Hague.

"The strategic dialog has indeed been postponed," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor. "The visit by Foreign Minister Hague is an important phase in the ongoing exchange between the countries and the question of Israeli officials being unable to travel to Britain will be on the top of the agenda as far as we are concerned."

The annual strategic dialog between UK and Israel was launched two years ago in order to improve bilateral relations but at the beginning of the year the dialog broke off. Secretary Hague promised Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to solve the issue of universal jurisdiction.

Universal jurisdiction is a broad legal concept that empowers judges to issue arrest warrants for officials visiting the UK for suspected war crimes. Pro-Palestinian activists have used the concept of universal jurisdiction to seek the arrest of visiting officials.

Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor canceled his trip to the UK this week for fear of arrest. Meridor was expected to give a speech in a meeting organized by the Britain and Israel Communications and Research Center, a pro-Israel group.

Last spring, pro-Palestinian activists persuaded a London judge to issue an arrest warrant for Kadima leader Tzipi Livni, who was foreign minister during the war in Gaza last year. Livni had to cancel his trip to avoid arrest.

Its a good question. Belgium had to change a law or two iirc relating to this after Rummy got a tad nervous about travelling there for some NATO meeting.

Britain probably just gained a modicum of competetive advantage in trade with Muslim states although involvement in the Afghan fiasco will likely temper it.

The British parliament discussed the issue of "mischievous arrest warrants" in July and will soon propose a bill to amend the law, according to Britain's Foreign Office.

Mr. Murdoch is still a gruff tough guy that has not converted from his Roman Catholic upbringing, so any suggestion that a jew is in charge is false.

Newscorp has greater transparency and public overview than any similar company located in the arab or developing world. This is attributable to Newscorp being traded on the Australian stock exchange and NASDAQ. Newscorp must declare all investment interests and provide SOX compliant documentation in its public filings. This is quite different from Al Jazeera.

It is a nice sentiment to say If you are innocent and have nothing to hide, you can travel to the UK. However, what about the hassle of a nuiscance charge? Until such time as one is able to disprove the allegations one could face months of detention and untold aggravation. It's just not worth it. There is something quite hypocritical of promoting this sort of regime, while the President of Sudan who is an indicted for crimes against humanity and war crimes discreetly moves about most of Africa and the Middle East and is free to do oil transactions with China, Japan and India. As the law stands now, any wacko with some support from vested interest groups can bring the charges. Is that really justice?

The 10-year-old law gives Belgium's courts the right to judge anyone accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide, regardless of where the crime took place.

Apart from Bush and Blair, the officials named in the suits were US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Rumsfeld's deputy Paul Wolfowitz, Attorney General John Ashcroft, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and General Tommy Franks, who led US forces in Iraq.

Bush, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Rice and Wolfowitz were additionally accused over the US-led campaign in Afghanistan that toppled the Taliban regime.
