U.S. Senator Murray wins re-election

2010-11-05 07:54:17 GMT+7 (ICT)

SEATTLE (BNO NEWS) -- Democratic U.S. Senator Patty Murray from Washington state is expected to win re-election, giving Democrats a total of 53 seats in the U.S. Senate, local media reported on Thursday.

KPTV political analyst Tim Hibbitts made the projection on Thursday, calling the race for Murray. As of late Thursday afternoon, with 78 percent of precincts reporting, Murray had a total of 925,145 votes - or 51 percent. Her Republican challenger, Dino Rossi, had 878,572 votes (49 percent).

Murray's victory will give Democrats a total of 53 seats in the U.S. Senate, a majority. Washington's U.S. Senate race was one of two races that remained undecided after Tuesday's mid-term elections.

The last U.S. Senate race which remains undecided is in Alaska. Although 100 percent of precincts have reported their results, 83,201 write-in ballots have yet to be counted and could give Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski another term.
