Reported gunman at NASA's Glenn Research Center was part of drill

CLEVELAND, OHIO (BNO NEWS) -- NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio was placed on lockdown on Friday morning after reports of a gunman in one of the buildings, officials said.

Katherine Martin, a spokeswoman for NASA's Glenn Research Center, initially said the incident began just after 9.30 a.m. EDT. "We are looking into unverified reports of possible activity involving a gun," she said.

WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported that gunshots had been fired inside building 77, injuring at least one person, but officials later said that the entire situation was part of a security drill.

Police said that a NASA employee at one of the buildings had received an automated security call saying there was a man with a gun at the complex, but did not hear the message saying it was only a drill.

NASA's Glenn Research Center is named after Ohio-born astronaut and U.S.Senator John Glenn, who became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard NASA aircraft Friendship 7.
