Car bomb kills 10, wounds 38 in Iraqi city of Karbala

BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) -- At least ten people were killed and 38 were wounded on Monday as a car bomb exploded in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, police and medical sources said.

Police told local media that the bomb exploded near the Imam Abbas mosque in the northern part of the city, about 118 kilometers (73 miles) south of Baghdad.

Among the victims there are Iranian pilgrims, and according to Mohammed al-Moussawi, head of the Karbala provincial council, the car bomb targeted them.

Some 1,500 pilgrims from Iran visit Iraqi Shiite shrines every day, especially in the holy cities of Najaf and Kerbala.

Last week at least 74 people were killed and more than 300 others were injured when a series of blasts struck targets across the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

Sixteen blasts, including at least thirteen car bombs, were heard in several neighborhoods in Baghdad, including Kadhimiya, Amil, Bayaa, Shulaa, Ur, Zuhour, Sadr City, and Yarmouk, most of them being Shiite neighborhoods.
