Irrigation Dept expects water levels in Chaophya back to normal by Thursday

BANGKOK, 9 November 2010 (NNT) - The Department of Royal Irrigation has announced that the water levels in the Chaophya River will return to normal by Thursday; however, the flood situation in the South still needs to be closely monitored.

The Department said the amount of water released from the Chaophya Dam on Tuesday was less than that of the day before, indicating that the water level was subsiding. It added that the areas around the Chaophya River also saw less flooding, hoping the areas would return to normalcy by Thursday.

As for the situation in the Northeastern province of Ubol Ratchatani, the water has been flowing into the Chi River, raising its level by two centimeters; but the Department said inundation was out of the question at this time, given the water could flow out easily, and that the Chi and the Moon rivers did not merge in the province.

Concerning the Southern flood situation, the Irrigation Department stated that heavy rains and monsoon storm could create another round of flood. It urged related officials and the people to closely monitor the news and updates from the Meteorological Department. It also said officials had been managing the water levels in the reservoirs, making them stay as low as possible, so they could hold more water brought by rains until the end of the year.
