Laos Visa Exiting Ubon

Featured Replies

I'm going to Laos in January for a month, entering by land at the Ubon R-Pakse crossing (Chong Mek). I want a get a one month Laos visa (btw, I hold a Canadian passport with a Thai retirement visa). Where can I get the Laos visa?

Thanks all.

Once you exit the Thai side you can go and get one in the second building you come to on the Laos side (right hand side).

Bring US dollars if you can as it will be cheaper. If not Baht will do but they will try and get 1,500 baht from you. Best thing to do is when you hand your form in hand them 1,100 - 1,200 baht and it is usually accepted. Don't give them a chance to ask for 1,500.

US dollars are generally useful in Laos anyway. A couple of years back the taxi that brought us back to Pakse from the lower Mekong only wanted dollars.

Buying dollars in Thaiand is not straightforward as in falangland. You can trawl the bigger banks in Ubon for dollars starting with Bangkok bank (I have got mine there before but I got the impression its a hit or miss thing whether they have any - and be careful you do not get lumbered with all bills above $20 denomination. The exchange booth at Ubon airport does not quote a sell baht buy dollar rate, so I suspect they will not do it (they were closed when I dropped in). I seem to recall that you can get dollars for foreign currencies (including the baht) within the bigger banks in Laos.
