No not mine; haven't been able to grow any yet. ;)

It's about a 13-year old dog's swollen testicles and prostate. And as humans and dogs don't differ that much, I rather place this topic here than in the pet's forum.

During the last 1 1/2 year I went to the vet twice as there was blood dripping from the penis of this dog. Not good, I thought. The vet asked if this dog had mated lately and I answered 'NO'. Venereal disease only possible with this if it can have an incubation time of about 9 years. The vet thought urinary track problems and gave an ab cure. And both times the problem seem to clear up.

About 2 weeks ago I didn't think this dog's penis looked normal (a bit rough surface) and yet again blood drops. So, back to the vet. The vet thought the penis looked normal, and blood test and urine analysis normal as well, except that they found big blood particles. But then when the vet took the catheter out, there was some blood at the end, but furthermore nothing.

So, I went home with dog.

After this trip the dog slowly started walking more difficult, as if the strength in his hind quarters was lessening and started skipping meals. Back tot he vet. X-ray: very enlarged prostate, testicles swollen and foreskin swollen. From balls to foreskin skin red inflamed but not hot. White red blood cells not increased. No fever. Dehydration. Discharge from the penis (and today that was increased)

As I haven't had a case like this before I don't know what's going on and what to think about it.

Yesterday the dog got an ab-shot and IV, today the same plus anti-inflammation shot. That was this morning and this evening the size of the testicles have increased slightly, not decreased. When you push in the testicle a small pit/put remains, indicating liquid under the skin. Tomorrow back at the vet for more IV and treatment.

Is it possible that the catheter has done damage inside and added insult to injury, causing now the swollen testicles and foreskin next to the swollen prostate (I think the swollen prostate was already there but I can be mistaken)?

Are we looking at Chronic prostatitis (http://menshealth.about.com/cs/menonly/a/prostatitis.htm) and if so what can be done to help this dog?

No biopsy taken yet, but is that a possibility, I mean that it can cause all these symptoms?

I'm pretty worried by now, and really don't like seeing this dog is so much pain.

Anyone who can give me some clarity on this case?

Thank you in advance. :jap:

Deferring to your wishes, the topic is here, however, you might want to think about moving it to the pet forum. I really, really don't know too many men who have suffered from these symptoms and if I did they would certainly have my deepest sympathy.

At any rate, I want to wish you the best of luck with finding treatment that is effective. I've had very good luck with vets here in Thailand. Where are you located? It might be helpful to posters to know.

nienke, u got me on that one... thought u underwent a sex change for a minute....

try posting mangotogo the aussie retired vet with the whippets, maybe he can do an online consult with u;

what about cancer? testes cancer does happen in dogs u know...

could be he suffered some kind of trauma to the testes? i had a goat do that, and the infection went on for months, in the end we castrated an emergency full castration and had to remove not just the testes but the 'string' that goes up by the urethra. the end was sad. my favorite buck died of septicemia from the infection which moved from the testes to the blodd since thet is easy for bacterias to move in to system through unrinary etc.... 'puun' was my fave red buck, and stud/

he jumped a fence several times to get to his nannies and his balls (big and hanging low, men, take note) hit the top of the fence several times... the bruising caused infection that wasnt visible till far along... he, btw, also had normal blood counts for a while, and ups and downs, responded to antibiotics (injections) and viatmin supplements, but his system sort of wound down... apparently a common problem among many male mammals possibly men also if they get their balls hit or kicked ....

Scott and Bina, Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated. :)

Haha, Bina, despite the Monthly Misery and having too much yang compared to yin, no balls for me, just a kind-of high speed course in balls and prostates. :o:D

And Scott, according to the website mentioned below, up to 25% of all men have some sort of problem with their prostates somewhere in their lives. That's a shocking awful lot!

I thought to post here, because I've seen posts about prostate problems before, hence me thinking/hoping to get more answers here. (as said in my OP dogs don't differ that much from humans with the diseases).

There are a few things with this dog; first he already had problem with maybe his bladder or maybe it was his prostate for which he got ab's.

Then he got that catheter in and AFTER that his testicles etc started swelling up. I wonder if this catheter added to the problem this dog already had, whether that be chronic prostatitis, benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer, we don't know as we haven't had the possibility to find that out yet due to this sudden problem.

Orchitis may also happen as a result of other infections such as prostatitis, epididymis, or sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. Men who experience recurrent urinary infections, who have congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract, or those who have an indwelling catheter are also more at risk of getting orchitis.

He still pees normal puddles, but in little spurts. Just collected some urine for the vet to examine (first urine analyzes came back normal, except for the big red blood particles). And this morning he walked a little bit easier, even cocked his leg again. So, I suppose (hope) that's a good sign.

Anyway, off to the vet for another round of treatment. Poor dog! :(
