Has anyone heard of this before or is just a story ?

'A YOUNG backpacker's tropical holiday turned cautionary tale after she was abducted for Thailand's sex trade.

AS THE ferry docked at Koh Samui in Thailand, Carey Furze soaked up the scene. It was everything a tropical holiday island should be coconut trees swaying in the breeze, sandy beach as far as her eyes could see and friendly locals.'

Written as a book but -

'Years after her escape, Carey, now in her early 40s, has written Sex Slave about her experience.

"I think it is still happening in Thailand and I think this happens all over the world, even in Australia," she says.

"Women have to pay attention to their intuition. Be aware of what is happening around you and have an escape plan."

Maybe not totally fictitious. Just 'sexed up'. The sex slave angle of course is just nonsense.

Girls are constantly warned not to go/drink with the Thai men. Of course there will be many honourable men, but there are likely to be just as many who are not. Perhaps she struck upon one who thought that by her going with him that she was easy game.

The sex slave angle is just BS. Why didn't she report any of this to the police, her embassy...anyone? No fellow travellers to back her up? I can assure you, back in those days Backpackers were much closer. They wouldn't even allow you to sit alone.

Something slightly rotten about her story.

I can tell you, on that island a friend of mine got attacked whilst out for a run. In retaliation the culprit got handed a beating and the family had to pay compensation for his misdeed.

Where is her evidence of sex slavery? Just hyperbole used to sell her book.

These things happen. I don't know about Thailand, but certainly in many countries of the world. No, I don't think this is quite common here. It's bad anywhere it happens.

But from that short article, some questions come to mind. Why did she spend the whole night in her bungalow without alerting anyone? And indeed, as Jiu-Jitsu posted, backpackers were much closer then. I backpacked in Thailand, including Koh Samui, during 1987/88. Didn't she know any other backpackers? And even at that time, there was a police station on the island, and there were owners and staff of the bungalow she could have alterted. She makes it sound like she was completely on her own, which is unlikely. And she will have to convince me that the bed against the door prevented the guy from coming in, if he really wanted to and if there was really no staff around.

It sounds like a local stupid guy tried to get a white girl and she was scared but nothing happened (she escaped in time), and now she is trying to make money out of it by selling it as a story about almost being sold into the sex trade as a sex slave. Oops. Did I just mention the "S" word twice? Wrong: The title is "My experience as a white slave", letting anybody guess. Well, it certainly sells books. Even though the article doesn't mention anythng about her experience as a slave, just a slimy guy trying to get in her panties.

I do feel sorry that this happened to her. Men should not behave like that. It could have happened in NZ or any other country in the world. However, she is making fun of women all over the world who are really sold into the sex trade. And who are really sex slaves. For years on end. She has no idea what she is talking about - if we can judge her from this short article, which we probably shouldn't.

trying to sell her book. What a stupid woman, i dont believe this happened to her.

Why is there no mention of going to the police when she got back to her hotel.

Koh samui is well known all over the world and shes trying to make money. when nobody can say if it was truth or not

i don't beleive it because if someone is missing then someone will contact there embassy and report them missing.

i am sorry but when i hear the words like " i did not want to efend them so i got on a gangs motor bike and went into some strangers hows" i think to myself this lady was a victim of her own ignorance.

if u know this sorte of thing happens everywhere in the world then why were did she think that i might not be the best thing to go to a stranger country. then i suspect that the only reason that the lady went on the back of the thai persons back is because she thought she was getting a free taxi. i mean it is not like back packers are not tight with there money

advice for ladies specially young ladies in thailand.

travel in groups

dont show off your body too much. specially if u r around large groups of thai drunk people.

ladies u have to remember that if u show off too much over here it can be very very dangerous if u go out late on your own and get left to find your own way back to your hotel.

put it this way i would not let my 14 year old daughter go out the same way she would dress in england.when i explain why. which i will not explain in full on here . she understands

Well, after having been in the backpacker business for over 20 years I can't say that I have heard of many young women going missing and honestly, her story has nothing to so with the sex trafficking whatsoever.

I didn't want to seem unfriendly so I got on the back of his bike and we putt, putted along the road," Carey says.

more like thought she was getting a free. lift. whats what they say. nothing is free.

i don't suppose there is any actual real eveidence to back up this story.

next the film the beach will be sold as fact story.

if i can sell stories with no evidence as real stories then i am the wrong business.

If I read the story correctly she staid only one night on Samui...and that was "My experience as a white slave" ?

Yeah right, but the title is good for sensational book selling; people just love these kind stories and book titles and buy them for Xmas.

In the more than 30 years I've been coming to Thailand I have heard these kind of stories about beautiful girls, kidnapped and vanished into outer space, abducted to be sex slaves but I've never encountered anybody (Farang) myself who told me any details about a case they knew about a girl who was abducted and held as a white sex slave...never!

"Carey says she spoke to many other young female travellers with friends missing in Thailand who were never seen again."

How come I NEVER heard about these stories; never met any of those girls; never read a story in Europe about vanished girls (or do they kidnap only girls from NZ and Oz?) ? Nor did any of the many people/friends/expats I know in Thailand? :o ...

But this Carey woman says she spoke to MANY other young female travellers...? Really?

White girls' slavery in Thailand ? hmmmm..maybe it happened a few times that a girl was held against her will but structural white slavery in Thailand ?

No. <_<

Blurb from the her 2002 book 'Held' before the recent rewrite and title change:

Based on a true story, Held is a chilling tale of adventure and survival. Four young western women are abducted into sex slave prostitution in Asia.

Kelly is from a small beach town in Australia. Young and adventurous she decides to backpack around Thailand alone.

Laurie was dismissed from the American Military for unbecoming conduct. She travels to Thailand to rethink her future.

Fiona is from a poor family in London. She is sent to Bangkok as a courier for a drug shipment to repay her debt.

Karin is the spoilt youngest child of a wealthy Swedish industrialists. She travels to Bangkok for a relaxing vacation.

This story follows four girls and their vastly different reactions to being held together, as sex slaves and how they attempt to escape and get away.

I also don't think this story is true. Sounds like more or less fiction.

Especially this so called "white slave" trade where "wealthy Asian tourists prepared to pay handsomely for the "white girl" experience".

There are many of massage parlours in Bangkok which offers Russian girls and from other eastern European countries, so there is no need to abduct anybody at all if somebody wanted to get their hands on a white girl.
