Any Benefit For Australian Residency Stamp In Thai Passport

Featured Replies

My TW has Australian Residency and will soon renew Thai Passport.

I remember reading in the past that there is no need to have a stamp in the passport as all info is in the Immigration system.

Is there any advantage in getting the stamp, which I believe is available on request?

You are referring to the permanent visa 100 which is affixed in the passport. The visa is linked to the passport number electronically on the DIAC database.

DIAC issue a letter when you visa is approved which has the visa number, the passport number and date of expiry after this date you have to apply for a RRV or Australian citizenship if you wish to travel overseas after this date.

The expiry date only applies if you are out of the country (Australia).

The problem may arise with airlines who may want to see your visa. It would pay to carry the letter or a photocopy with your passport.

At present, the only visa in her passport which we are about to renew is the Sub Class 309. We have the letter with the grant of the Sub Class 100. We are about to travel to Sydney to apply for a new Passport, which I believe will be posted to our home after about a 1 month turnaround from Bangkok.

I was wondering if there is a need for any stamp to be applied to the new passport when it arrives?

No, all the info is on the Immigration database. As all passports are electronically swiped at the airports on entry and departure, it is unlikely that a paper visa will give any benefit.

My wife received a new passport in July, the visa is still linked to her old expired passport. You could carry both passports or get DIAC to transfer to the new passport. You should telephone them for further information.

The visa will need to be linked to the new passport, an expired passport cant be used. As electau suggests, get in touch with DIAC

Thanks all round,

Will do, I just remember some discussion, I think here on TV, re the pro's and con's of having the "Visa Label" attached to the passport. The letter we received with the Sub Class 100 grant stated that this is available if requested!
