People do merit making on Mother's Day

BANGKOK: -- Thai people across the country do merit makings today to pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen on the auspicious occasion of her 73rd birthday today, which is also designated as the 'Mother's Day'.

In Bangkok, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin led more than 1,000 people, including government officials, business persons and the general public to give alms to 574 Buddhist monks at Sanam Luang ceremonial ground this morning.

Events and activities are also organized all the day in honour of the beloved Thai Queen.

These include a worship of Gods and Goddesses at Chinese Shrines and a longkong fair in Chinatown, or Yaowaraj Road, to promote the fruit from the three southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.

Merit makings and other activities were also reported in other provinces.

HM Queen urges Thais to love motherland

BANGKOK: -- Her Majesty the Queen wants Thai nationals of all races and religions to be proud of and love their motherland, and always help each other.

In her birthday speech here Thursday evening to more than 16,000 well-wishers from all groups of the society, including cabinet members, government officials, representatives of the private sector, student and the general public, Her Majesty the Queen said that Thailand would become a most liveable nation in the world if people care for and eager to assist each other with sincere sympathy.

"All the Thai people should be proud of and love their motherland, which provides abundant resources for their living", she said.

Her Majesty the Queen said that she also wants all Thais to have a happy life with well-being and good health, and free from problems and disaster of all forms.

"I wish to see a cheerful smile on everybody's face, including those in the troubled southern border region", she noted.

Her Majesty the Queen urged that all groups of the society join forces to stop the spate of violence in the deep South and condemn those behind the insurgency in the region.

The beloved Thai Queen said that the world's first 'Food Safety Award' she received earlier this week from the World Health Organization (WHO) is the honour of all parties involved in the food safety programme.

She urged that all the parties concerned retain the country's food safety standard for the sake of good health of all Thais and the country's good image in the international community.

Her Majesty the Queen thanked the government and all parties concerned for their support of handicraft and farm products produced by local villagers.

She suggested as well that people help conserve water resources and join hands in water management programmes to address the problem of water shortage and drought in the long run.

Her Majesty the Queen also thanked the well-wishers for their blessings on her 73rd birthday, which falls on 12 August.
