Hiya all

Due to my Fiance being pregnant and restricting her travel, can I attend the Embassy, etc alone for the following:

Naturalisation office in Bangkok for required marriage documentation (aunthentication of affirmation to marry).

Register of marriage at UK embassy.

Registering child at embassy for UK passport.

Hand in settlement visa application (I understand it is ok to hand in the relevant documentation ie. emails, bank statements at interview).

Also if I can what is the relevant documentaion (signed) I would need from my fiance to continue the process alone.

Thanks all :o

I don't know about visiting the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs office, but, certainly, all the stuff you need to do at the embassy can be done alone. In terms of the visa application, though, make sure your wife has signed the application form. She will, however, be expected to attend for any interview.

Thanks for your replys.

So I cannot go to the Naturalisation office alone?

I dont like doing it, but would it be better in this case just to pay someone to do the marriage documentaion ie. an agency

Register of marriage at UK embassy.
You cannot register a Thai marriage at the embassy. What you can do is use the embassy to place a record of your marriage in the Public Records office in London. This may be useful to any of your descendants in the UK who wish to trace their family tree, but has no real practical value and is certainly, IMHO, not worth paying the fee for.

Under the Foreign Marriages Act 1892, any marriage legally recognised in the country where it took place is legally recognised in the UK. In any circumstance in the UK where you may need to produce your marriage certificate the Thai certificate, with certified English translation, will be acceptable.

You can do the paperwork to present to the District Office for marriage by yourself - it is your paperwork after all. That includes visit Embassy, have translation made and registered at MFA. But you will both have to visit the District Office or arrange (small fee) for the official to visit you together at some other location for issuance of marriage certificate.

Sorry I would just like to clarify. After getting the affirmation to marry from the Embassy. What documents do I take to the Naturalisation office in Bangkok?

You take the paperwork from Embassy and have if officially translated by one of the translation services - it is then sent to the MFA for registration and a copy returned to you present when you marry. Believe most translations services also provide the MFA registration if you want so you do not even have to go out there. There will be a fee (both ends) but as you save long taxi rides it is probably worth it.

Thanks Lopburi3

I may just pay the fee and get it all done as I have alot to do on arrival!

The Agency on wireless Road is reputable? So I just hand in the affirmation to marry and copy of passports etc? So what is the overall documnetation needed for marriage and what has tobe signed by my fiance.

I am under the impression that this takes a week or so at around 10,000thb costs. I know I should do it myself however it doesnt look like it may workout like that. I prefer tobe taking care of my GF than running around in Bangkok! :D

The marriage process is listed in http://www.dopa.go.th/English/servi/serv.htm

Your Embassy has a very good website that you should read.

They will also probably be able to provide you a list of translation services but if not any along Wireless should be ok. The process should not take more than 3 days I suspect. Less if you pay for fast service. The wife only has to sign at the registration of Marriage time at the District Office or where you have agreed to have the paperwork signed. There is no cost for marriage normally but if outside office a small fee and if you need witness or translation service a few hundred baht will probably do it all. The cost will be for Embassy paper notary, translation and registration at MFA. I suspect about 4,000 baht should be enough.

After you marry you will want to reverse the process and have marriage certificate translated and again registered with MFA. I would make four or five copies as they may be required for official purposes at a later date so perhaps with that the total could come up to your 10k mark.

Ok thanks lopburi3

I am a bit clearer now. I just did not want to turn up in Bangkok without the exact paperwork etc. As for the UK website it does not clarify the finer points of being able to do this alone.

Thanks for all replys :o

On the subject of timing, you can do it in 2 days. I did last month and that included getting up from Hua Hin on two occasions.

A couple of notes :

Download the pdf of the affirmation from The Embassy's website and redo it in exactly the same format. You'll see the instructions on the site. I'd copy it on to disk as I've known a few people who were told to redo it by The Emb as commas etc were missing. They're pernickety.

The signed affirmation will be ready from 9am the following working day - cost 2,625 Baht.

The Emb won't recommend a translation service, but there a few the other side of Ploenchit. Any are fine as long as it's a certified translation. I paid 400 B and it was done in 30 mins.

Jump on the skytrain at ploenchit and get off at the end of the line - Mo Chit. Hop into a taxi and you're at MFA in about 15 mins - 100B.

You can pay 400 for the certification from them and get it back in 3 days, or 800 B and they say it takes 2-3 hours. Mine took 1 hour. Then you've got all your paperwork and it just needs the Amphur registration. They didn't ask me for any money, but I gave 200B.

All in all, the process cost me @5,000 B, including all the travelling.

All except the Amphur can be done on your own.

Hope that helps.

On the affirmation to marry, is it OK to put Annual Salary (approx) as weekly, monthly wages differ?

When I did my affirmation, I wasn't working, so entered the figure for my liquid assets. The point being, I don't think they care too much what you enter in that field, so your annual salary should suffice.
