I have just returned from a holiday up country Chiang Mai Cihang Rai..district

I was the passenger for most part of our trip ,but we had many Thai friends women and men drive for us.I must conclude I don't believe Thais in general have any idea of the working mechanics of motor vehicle at all.sad.gif

For Example .....Lady Driver age 40 years old driving up a steep hill goes from 3rd gear to 5th truck vibrating to death at 20 ks an hour pulling about 700 rpm

For Example .....Male Driver Age 45 coming down a steep decent takes out of 3rd gear and puts his foot on the clutch and free wheels down the hill out of control.

overtaking in the incorrect gear no acceleration. I could go on, after driving heavy transport in Australia for many years i did try to offer some advise only to be told by my Thai wife to keep quiet because that would be seen as to offend them and there generous nature.......I would just say in closing my future trips will be with me behind the steering wheel only.......Looking out for the unexpected ........Namely Thais Drivingjap.gif

1. the driving tests here doesnt test most thais and the mechanics and safety driving skills.

2. most schools here, especially the teaching syllabus during the 1970s-80s doesnt teach the thais on the physics well enough.

but of course there are a lot of thais who are very good in driving, know a lot of the mechanics and stuffs.

Toyota and Honda chose LOS as their base in the South east Asia.

I know quite a few Thai drivers and I consider them good safe drivers of course there is the exception and you can usually spot them while driving. I choose to drive my own truck and not let anyone else drive it other than at a service period.

My sister in-law doesn't drive long distances she pays a friend to drive for her.

I was in the car once when she drove and I could see why, I asked if I could take over :o and she was happy for me to do that, she had been pulling away in second and going straight to fifth and would stay out in the centre of the road not more than 50kph and I could hear the poor old engine struggling, her mobile phone was ringing constantly and when at the lights people behind were leaning on the horn honking away because she was talking on the phone and wouldn't go.:D

The question is really their age, but rather what sort of experience they have behind the wheel. It's not at all uncommon for Thai's to get their first daily driving experience until well into their 20's, 30's or later. A 45 year old Thai driver might only have the same (or less) driving experience than a 20yo Farang.
