F-111s to fire up for final farewell with fly-over

Today is the last time the F-111 jet fighters will take to Australian skies after a military career spanning nearly 40 years.

They have never been used in combat but the F-111s were bought at the height of the Cold War as a deterrent.

The jets are being decommissioned in favour of the FA18 Super Hornets.

Four F-111s will end up on display at military museums and the 17 others will be scrapped.

As a final farewell, there will be a fly-over Ipswich, Brisbane, the Sunshine and Gold coasts today.

They will depart Amberley airbase at Ipswich, west of Brisbane at lunchtime for the fly-over and then touch down for the last time.

A sad day for me as my late father served in the RAAF in Amberley Air Force Base in Queensland.

As a young man then about 20 and my love of aircraft i use to go to Amberley Air force Base often and see my father at work and see the A8 F1-11s .commonly known as the Pig.This aircraft was designed on the drawing board back in the very late 50s and the Australia Government purchased them to replaced the ageing Canberra Bomber A total of 562 aircraft were built and Australia was the last country still to fly the old war birds........RIP you will be missed wai.gif
