Keeping My In-Laws Car.....

Featured Replies

I am currently staying up north. My in-law who lives in BKK is letting me keep his car for almost 2 years. All I have to do maintain his car insurance and road tax (car plates?) payments.

Is there anything I have to do about 're-registering' the car's plates since they are from another province or is nothing required?

I do have a driver's license, but never 'owned' a car, so does the insurance on the in-laws car automatically cover me or must it be specified in the insurance policy?

There is no need to move cars reg/change plate as long as owner still is registered living in BKK

Car insurance docs can tell you if insurance is restricted to 2 persons, or if it covers any sober driver with valid license. the latter is the msot usual, but better check to be sure :)

Also it's a very good idea to get a letter from your in-laws stating that you have permission to drive it and carry it with you in your glove box in case anything happens as the police can at minimum extort money from you about possibly driving a stolen car and at worst arrest you for it until it gets cleared up and if your in-laws are not immediately available that may be a problem.

There is a lot of illegal car rental that goes on to so i'd not give the cops any possible reason to exploit it for tea money..

excellent advice. the document should be supported by signed copy of car owners id card and copy of reg book

and if you get into a conflict with your in laws, at least they cant report the car stolen

Though we are all on very good terms, I posted this topic to cover just such an eventuality. He will be out of the country attending school for more than 3 years and I have be 'offered' to keep the car, (now), for the whole 3+ years with the above-mentioned stipulations.

Will having the extra documentation that everyone has suggested on this topic suffice in my driving this car (legally) problem-free for this duration?

To be able to pay annual road tax at DLT, you need original reg book.

Glad I could help...... :) Especially if they are out of country, oh the possible horror!!!
