Thai Wife

If I may chip in tuppence.

I'd say go for it but be careful. If something doesn't add up financially get to the bottom of it. Be wary of shared accounts and supplementary credit cards and if you are planning a big purchase (car etc) do it before you get married.

I did none of these things and my wife of ~7 years has upped and left and taken *everything* with her and I am having a devil of a job getting anything back.

That said, for every bad story like mine there seem to be dozens of happier ones and I wish you both the very best.

Actually, for every story like yours there are thousands more, in addition to those that are not even mentioned because of embarassment.

Good luck living the dream. There's usually an expiration date on it - one way or another :o

Married to my Thai wife just over 10 years now - this is the third wife (one was a farang, the second was a Thai - both in Australia) so I can safely say that it matters very little where you get married but it matters a lot that you get the right one.

Can you talk to each other about everything and anything? Do you feel like friends as well as lovers? How well do you know what she likes? Could you select clothes for her (not including size of course) that she would consider trying on?

Little things make all the difference, but no matter how much you learn about a girl, they always have more surprises for you - if she shares those surprises with you, then you may have a good marriage.

Communication in every sense of the word is absolutely key - without it, you cannot be friends - and that is what you must be at the beginning, and I hope you will be, at the end.

As for signing away your interests in any land you may buy, as a foreigner, you cannot own land in any case, so you can't buy it before getting married. Your only worry would be if your future partner were to leave and take the land, refusing to pay you for it or sell it to split the money with you - but if you had worries like that you wouldn't be considering marrying her anyway right?

All the best for the future, I hope you are both truly happy! :o

Hi again all ,

Hmmm, Im thinking very seriously about proposing to my lovely Thai girlfriend next year . It's only a matter of time really .

Just wondering if anyone had any comments as to the advantages associated with a foreigner having a Thai wife , and the disadvantages . That includes the ads and dis-ads for her too !

You know the kind of thing , regarding the law , rights , funny comments ..etc etc

Should make interesting reading ......

Thanking you ,

Sadako .

( She never sleeps )

Many good points have been expressed here - but I have one to add that I don't see often....

Unless both of you have no families or relatives left in the world, a marriage is usually a union of two people that includes families as well. The links remain forever when you have children. Will you be comfortable for the rest of life with this notion? This question actually transcends race, culture, and social strata.

When the answer to this question is yes, then there shouldn't even be a second thought about jumping right in......
