A HUSBAND and wife who kept five Thai women as sex slaves in a Fairfield brothel have been jailed for at least seven years.

Trevor McIvor, 63, and his Thai-born wife, Kanokporn Tanuchit, 42, ''traded in human misery and poverty'' and their punishment would serve as a warning to others in the ''morally reprehensible'' sex slave trade, the judge, Johnathan Williams, said.

The pair, who have two young children, were the first people in NSW to be convicted under sexual servitude laws in 2008.

The conviction was quashed on appeal, but in a retrial earlier this year they were found guilty of five counts of possessing a slave and five counts of using a slave.

The women, all Thai nationals, were forced to work in McIvor's brothel, Marilyns, seven days a week, to pay back a $45,000 debt each was told was the price for a tourist visa.

Known by their working names Jasmine, Nicky, Yoko, Suzie and Sophie, the women were often abused and humiliated, could not refuse clients, were put at risk of sexually transmitted infections and were forced to work when sick. Their passports were confiscated, phone access was restricted and Tanuchit told them their families in Thailand would be harmed if they tried to escape.

One victim, Jasmine, saw at least 1165 clients while working 10 months without a day off.

They escaped after one of the women, Yoko, secretly contacted the Thai consul general in 2006. The police and immigration officials raided the premises the following day and found the women in an unlit, locked room.

In the District Court yesterday, the defendants were sentenced to a maximum 12 years jail, with a non-parole period of 7½ years for McIvor and seven years for Tanuchit.

Its very sad in some ways BUT these women did go there to be sex workers, so it's more of a case of karma gone extreme. Working a proper job(not just sitting there with legs open) would of saved them from this, unlike the child sex slave that are stuck in those things from 5 to 40 which makes them REAL victims

Perhaps these girls had full knowledge that they were going to be employed in Australia as prostitutes but in the belief they were going to earn big dollars, much more if they were to do the same in Thailand.

Maybe the job didn’t work out and they’re conditions of work was not as expected as has happened many times in the past with these type of Thai girls.

I have no reason to believe that the situation in this case is any different unless the full facts are published.

It`s all a vicious circle.

I believe that WOULD work. At least it would give protection to women who need it the most. There will ALWAYS be people who fall through the cracks. I think it's called acceptible losses. It ain't nice but nothing in life is perfect. Any time you can take the profit away from nasty business then the creeps of society will have to go elsewhere.
