Don't believe there will be much improvement in speed buying another unit. As for the SMC I had that model many years ago and wireless performance was never good and unit had difficult time with multi connections and overheated (and failed). Replaced with D-Link 2640T and had much more reliable wireless and service. Have now replaced that with Linksys WAG120N and it seems to work well but very simple interface compared with the D-Link.

Will move this thread to computers where you should get more response.

Interestingly my first router was a D-Link and was very bad for overheating, that's why I changed to SMC and have now bought a number of them for our various locations. I suppose everyone has a different experience ... B)

I agree the D-Link ran very hot but also had a physical wire issue when using it so not sure it was ever the cause of connection issues. I did find standing it on end helped keep it cooler.

But suspect poster will not find much improvement, if any, with a router change. From reports I have seen 3B has gone from poor to being more like Bad bAd baD.

I have 3BB in Udon and recently got rid of their rather decent Huawei modem and purchased the device mentioned in this thread.

Not sure if this TP-Link device is available in Thailand yet but certainly has improved my online connectivity and speed.

If you just have the huawei single port router, 3bb will give you a new wireless Router , the billion brand for less than a thousand baht if you go to a shop and show proof of service. It runs cool compared to some D-link routers I've used. Its a bargain.

Our computer group in Phuket has now collected about 16,000 data points for internet speed at various locations in Phuket by all the ISPs. Take a look at:

http://www.live-access.com/PhuketInternet.aspx/

The group consensus is that 3BB is at this time the best available service in Phuket (and that's not saying much), but your mileage will much depend on location.

I am stuck on TOT and waiting for 3BB ... any day now, fer sure, maybe next year, or the one after. But we have had members call for install and the 3BB man there early next morning and does good install.

Over the past 8 years here have tried about many routers. Despise D-Link, dislike Netgear, prefer Linksys/Cisco. The Billion ones used by TOT are usable but would not buy such.

getting very slow torrent download speeds with correct settings not sure why but real slow downloading torrents now...?

i asked the installer about upgrading router and he just say this one (billion) work good with 3bb no need diferant....so no help there....sorry

Thanks for the follow up, glassdude. Then it seems I might stick to the Huawei and call them and see what's going on with my speed

Problem with speed is usually along the line of the ISP rather than with the router.

A wireless router can only be bad after checking out the line speed it is getting from your ISP and comparing that with the speed your comp is getting wirelessly.

Could the built-in SPI firewall of the router be slowing torrents?
