LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan has filed for divorce from actress Bianca Kajilich.

28-year-old Donovan, who has shined in international competitions such as previous Wold Cups, officially filed for divorce from Kajilich, 33, who currently plays the role of Jennifer on CBS' 'Rules of Engagement' after over a year of being separated.

The couple married on December 31, 2006 but decided to separate in July 2009. However, formal divorce papers had not been submitted until this week

"We remain the closest of friends and will always be important parts of each other's lives," the couple, who have no children, said in a joint statement.
