Back in the day (many moons ago now) I got started with a Crossman air rifle when I was just a bit older than my daughter is now. I eventually earned enough for a 'real' one (Benjamin) and was pretty much hooked since then. I did eventually get into rifles and to a less extent shotguns and pistols.

Was considering getting one for the daughter in LOS; what is the procedure? In the States it's (was?) stupid simple...just pop down to the local store and pick out one that was within budget. I'm assuming it's not so cut and dry in Thailand. Can anyone provide pointers?

BTW, I understand that some will want to discuss neligent of a father I am and how children shouldn't have guns because that's their personal opinion. I can respect that; I don't insist on your brats getting classical harp lessons so please don't intrude onto this thread waging your 'holy war' unless you have something to contribute.

As an aside; the plan was to build her level up over the years essentially following what I did. Start off with the 0,177 wadcutters/hunting points, move up to a 10-22 (I had gone through three barrels by the time I graduated...is it legal to import aftermarket stocks/barrels to LOS?) and on to a Remington SPS 700 22-250 (absolute favourite rifle ever....nothing more contributing to a sense of satisfaction than dropping woodchucks-groundhogs-tearing up the soybean seedlings on the other side of a 25 acre field ~320 meters....try it sometime it's superchallenging). But with the price of ammo going the way it's going perhaps it will be better in 223?

I've seen this discussed before and suggest you do a search. I think the answer was something along the lines that air rifles are not legally obtainable in Thailand. The ownership of other firearms is also restricted to Thai nationals with just a few exceptions. The usual work-around would be to use a Thai partner or friend.

Haven't met your daughter, but I'm guessing a gun is not at the top of her list.

I searched for "rifle" and got back ~735 results; I went through the first 100 or so before posting and didn't find anything regarding air rifles proper.

I've seen them for sale in the basement of Lotus NakWan, so that was what prompted the questions as to their legality versus 'real' guns.

The rifle is not for me (around enough at work!), but to get her started. As such it would definitely be in either her name or her mums. Most I would ever touch it would be to show her the basics (safety tips and proper usage) and to ensure that it's cared for.

You'd be surprised at what she actually likes...for instance her second birthday took her through the toy section so that she could pick out her own gift and she skipped all the 'girlie' (Barbie dolls and such) and wanted a big yellow Tonka Truck....

"Try putting the search string in quotes: "air rifle" and "air rifles" (separate searches)

If you select 'Search titles only' you get:

"air rifle" - 2 hits

"air rifles" - 3 hits

Thanks for the assist; (search-foo is off today) having read all the threads that came back nobody actually comes out and says that the air rifle is treated as a weapon; they speculate that it is....guess I'll ask the local 5-0 for advice.
