Chavalit tells Japanese envoy he will not contest next poll

Pheu Thai Party chairman Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh told the first secretary of the Japanese embassy Monday that he will not stand in the next general election.

Chavalit was visited by the first secretary for politics, Nobu Ito, who asked the Pheu Thai chairman to brief him the political situation and the party's stand in the on-going charter amendments.

Chavalit told the envoy that the party might face another dissolution case so it would not be appropriate to select a new party leader now.

He said he would not seek a House seat but would continue to work for the party as assigned.

What does Gen. Chavalit know that we don't know (yet) ?

What does Gen. Chavalit know that we don't know (yet) ?

Perhaps that he'd be 83 at the end of the next term for MP's?

Chalerm opts out of censure debate

Outspoken Pheu Thai MP Chalerm Yoobamrung has vowed not to join the party's censure debate against the government if it's led by leadership rival Mingkwan Sangsuwan.

Mingkwan's style for the debate would be soft while the opposition would propose policies as solutions to problems, Chalerm claimed. He said he got the information from an interview Mingkwan's close aides gave to the media.

"They said this will be a bloodless, reconciliation [censure] debate, and which policies will be proposed.

"It's not my style. A censure debate must include grilling the government, attacking it on corruption or failure. Make the people see," said Chalerm, a party-list MP and chairman of Pheu Thai's MPs.

However, he wished Mingkwan good luck and hoped his rival and party colleague had good information. He said he could contribute information, but would not join the debate even if former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra asked him.

Chalerm's comments follow reports that Thaksin, de-facto leader of the party, did not oppose Mingkwan leading the censure debate and being nominated to replace Abhisit Vejjajiva as the prime minister.

The law requires nomination of an alternate prime minister for a censure debate involving the premier.

Chalerm has led the party's censure debate many times. He said he did not feel slighted but would rather opt out because if he joined the debate and there was any mistake, he might be blamed for the mistake.

He said he would pose questions to the government during parliamentary meetings instead.

Surasit Jiamwijak, a Pheu Thai MP close to Mingkwan, denied reports of a dispute between Chalerm and Mingkwan. But he said the pair had not talked about the debate.

"I'm confident Mingkwan can lead the censure debate well. In war, we have to learn to be flexible. Too hard or too soft cannot bring victory. It's up to situation," he said.

Surasit said the party had not decided who to scrutinise. But it had to nominate the name of an alternate premier.

He said the main target for the debate would be Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, then ministries and ministers.

Si Sa Ket MP Thanate Kruarat said Chalerm had told him he didn't have enough information for the debate but was content to provide information to support Mingkwan.

Even if he's wrong, even if I'm only getting half at the most of what he says, I rather hear Pol. Capt. Chalerm speak, than some other guy. Somehow I think lots of people like to hear k. Chalerm speak, he has a way with words :)

(edit, a search on a pro-red user that I think is clever and tries to post neutrally, I came up http://www.thaivisa....ost__p__4090286) after a few clicks. I think this is a good post.)

My main point, and the main point which I think that many pro-red posters are correct on, is that it is unclear who the "reds" are and what they actually want. There really are Red Shirts who don't support Thaksin, who just want a social change to bring Thailand up to speed with the rest of the world. There really are Red Shirts who want nothing other than for Thailand to return as the hub of corruption. There really are Red Shirts who don't want anything other than burning buildings down on holiday in Bangkok.

hanuman is obviously a poster of intelligence, as he shows again with his 'embittered' follow-up to your post. But they are arguments that score well in a debate, but cannot win you the debate. They're too easily dismissed.

What do you mean by 'associate'? Does this mean to lay plans together? Does it mean to be situated within 'x' number of meters of each other? You say people should walk away when they hear things they don't necessarily agree with.

Because of course everyone knows that's exactly what they should do!

If you and your friend and a girl are having some fun, and then the girl decides she's not having fun anymore and demands you both stop...and your buddy keeps on going...you have a number of choices. It doesn't really matter what you do if you don't either attempt to stop the rape yourself or high-tail it to get help to stop the rape...if you do nothing, or you continue to watch and refuse to denounce what is occurring, then you are facilitating the crime.

It's quite cute to phrase arson, killing, violence and terror as "things they don't necessarily agree with" (as if it were a matter of procedural differences). But whether it's cute or not isn't really all that relevant. Of course you should not only walk away....you should RUN AWAY, and straight to the POLICE to report the violent crime. Simply standing there or continuing to protest alongside and refusing to denounce what is occurring? Yes. You're facilitating the terrorist action.

The main point you believe the Red Shirts are correct on, is the very thing that makes them incorrect. And you, it would seem (on this issue).

You either denounce elements of your organisation which resort to terror...or you are a terrorist organisation. It's incredibly simply stuff. Nothing remotely complex about it.

You don't get to have your cake and eat it also.

The strife within the Pheu Thai Party continues as the other paper is reporting today in an interview that Yingluck has turned the position of becoming its next Party Leader because, "It's not my time now [to enter politics]."

So, the search for viable Party Leader continues now to replace the reluctant current Party Leader, Yongyuth Wichaidit.

Former Commerce Minister and current PTP MP Mingkwan has offered himself for the position, but a number of PTP MP's have said he's unsuitable and they prefer someone more nearer to Thaksin.

Smart girl, more profit in being outside than inside.

Everyone knows that choosing a leader will potentially rip PTP apart. Everyone knows they need a leader at least a few months before an election. It is also in the context that it is looking more likely they will fail to get the majority they need to form a government. Politcal powerbrokers are already admitting as much and talking about the next Abhisit led government. An early election looks increasingly likely as prices may rise later this year and traditional boost your demos with unemployed farmers and oldies is approaching again. Once the charter changes are on the statute books an election could be any time. The Korat, Surin and Ayuthaya results recently also have hurt PTP and knocked its previous confidence in elections

Posted

I think what Thaksin is doing is waiting until an election is called and it's too late for the MPs to jump ship. He will then name his puppet, and the PTP (as a whole) won't be able to do anything about it.

Curious that Lil Sis' would seemingly rebuke Big Bro's guidance.

She listed her business interests and work as the main excuse she used for not accepting the Party Leader position.

But yet, she's the boss at SC Assets only because of him.

That does seem the likely plan. Rat control maneuvers.

They've run her up the flag pole and not enough saluted,

so she says she is not even a flag. We all know she is still.

As noted above, don't commit to angering the smaller egos until their trapped into the deal, and then you are their only choice of meal ticket.

He could just go with Payup Or Else.

But then the crew would carry the rats to safety.

Yes, the two of the four Regional Directors of the Pheu Thai Party consisting of Yingluck (I note she's not forsaken that position) and her brother Payup (still a great campaign slogan material) are both likely still in contention.

Yingluck also mentioned that she wasn't an MP in turning down the Party Leader position, even though the current PTP Party Leader Yongyuth isn't one either.

It'll be an interesting headcount as to which of the PTP MP's will line up with in regards to Mingkwan, Yingluck, and Payup. They all have their own contingent of supporters as well as detractors. But just how many of each will been seen the eventual outcome.

As the clock ticks closer, will a dark horse emerge?

It's also interesting to see the family dynamics. Thaksin isn't particularly keen on being told no, even it's by a sister and one that he's put into key lucrative positions. Biting the hand that feeds doesn't go down very well with him, I imagine.

Party-hopping season begins with Bhum Jai Thai-Pheu Thai deal

The Bhum Jai Thai Party is poised to welcome five Pheu Thai MPs from Nakhon Ratchasima after striking a deal to allocate one Cabinet seat for the five following the upcoming snap election, a party source said Friday.

The five are Assnee Cherdchai, Somchai Petprasert, Linda Cherdchai, Prasert Jantararuangthong and Boonlert Krutkhuntode.

The source said the five saw a better opportunity to serve their constituents if they could switch from the opposition to the coalition.

The party hopping is expected to be formalised ahead of the House dissolution in order to meet the 90-day requirement to adopt a party's banner before the vote.

Ruam Chart Pattan MP Somchai Chatphatthanasiri from Nakhon Ratchasima is tipped to defect to Bhum Jai Thai in order to team up with the five to form a faction.

An additional interesting bit about him:

The Nation - May 20, 2009

Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra has given the nod for Pheu Thai Party's Nakhon Ratchasima MP Somchai Petprasert to become the new Party Leader of the Pheu Thai Party, an MP said yesterday.

^ Thaksin weakens and Newin strengthens

How many MPs does that give Peau Thai and BJT now? I've lost count.

I thought you were leading in to a joke, something like:

How many Peau Thai members does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Answer: Only one chosen PM at a time, to hold the lightbulb, with a certain great superbeing to stand outside and rotate the house.

A bit more info now on those work interests.

It seems that Thaksin's daughter, Pinthongta, age 29, has begun working with her aunt, Yingluck, age 44, at SC Asset. She doesn't have any formal position yet with the company, but has been helping her aunt in marketing, events, campaigns, and customer relations management.

What might have helped get a foot in the door at the rapidly expanding business is that she is the second-largest shareholder of SC Asset with 28.97% of its stock.

Her younger sister, Paethongtarn, has a smidgen more as the number one stockholder with 29.93%.

SC Asset has set a goal of 10 Billion Baht in sales next year.

Which put together gives them 58.9% of the company.

Maybe Auntie Yingluck had better watch out.

There is NEVER enough money for some people. ;)

That's true.

It was proven time and again with the voters' misconception that Thaksin was too rich to ever be corrupt.

If a cat-fight ever did start amongst the Shinawatra ladies, my money is on Waowapa in the Super Heavyweight division.

Chinnicha faces losing House seat for false asset statement

The National Anti Corruption Commission on Wednesday decided to seek the judicial review to back up its ruling to disqualify Pheu Thai MP Chinnicha Wongsawat from Chiang Mai, a niece of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The NACC ruled that Chinnicha had falsified her asset statement, an offence punishable by removing from House seat and banning from holding political office for five years.

Under the anti-graft law, the NACC ruling will be forwarded to the Constitution Court for mandatory review.

Thai anti-graft agency seeks to disqualify Thaksin's niece as MP

Thailand's anti-graft agency is seeking to disqualify as an MP a niece of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, an anti-corruption official said on Wednesday. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) said on Wednesday it has asked the Supreme Court's criminal division for holders of political portfolios to rule whether Chinnicha Wongsawat, an MP of the opposition Puea Thai Party, has intentionally submitted a false assets declaration, according to a report of the English-language Bangkok Post online.

Chinnicha is a daughter of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and Yaowapa. Yaowapa is a younger sister of Thaksin, who was toppled by a military coup in September 2006 and is now in self-exile. If the court rules against her, the MP from northern Chiang Mai province will lose her seat in the House of Representative and be banned from politics for five years. NACC Secretary-General Apinan Issarangkura na Ayutthaya was quoted as saying that Chinnicha failed to report a debt of 100 million baht when declaring her assets and liabilities to the NACC in January 2008 upon her election as a House member.

NACC seeks review on ban of ex-PM Thaksin's niece

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) yesterday decided to seek a judicial review to back up its ruling to disqualify Pheu Thai MP for Chiang Mai Chinnicha Wongsawat, a niece of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The NACC ruled that Chinnicha had falsified her asset statement, an offence punishable by disqualification from the House of Representatives and a ban from holding political office for five years.

The NACC ruling will be forwarded to the Supreme Court for mandatory review.

After the 2007 general election, Chinnicha submitted her asset statement but omitted to declare a Bt100-million loan transaction with Bannapot Damapong, Thaksin's brother-in-law.

The transaction was reported to the Asset Examination Committee, tasked with investigating the unusual wealth of Thaksin and his family. The AEC reported the transaction to the NACC.

In her defence, Chinnicha argued that she did not include the transaction in her asset statement because she was uncertain about the loan's legal status, since it was frozen pending the AEC investigation.

The NACC overruled the defence on the grounds that Chinnicha filed an additional asset statement to disclose the loan eight months after the discovery by the AEC.
