Turning My Diesel Into Greased Lightning

Recommended Posts

High All,

Picking up a second hand used misubishi ex-army diesel beast real soon and was wondering if anyone out there had any experience using cooking oil in place of the diesel??

Have done a bit of research and it looks like you only need the fancy extras (oil heaters n stuff) if you live somewhere cold..don't think the cold is really gonna be a problem here in bkk :D

from what I can see, if you have properly cleaned used oil (or fresh oil I presume), then you can pour this straight into the engine and away she streaks?? That easy?? No fancy conversion stuff needed??

What then would be the drawbacks?? Not concerned about the smell...I guess passers by would be happier to sniff used oil than suck in them monoxide nasties...

And if it is that easy then why can't you pick it up at petrol stations??

I am probably missing something major and would appreciate any light that anyone could shed onto it b4 I turn my motor into a deep-fat-fryer on wheels!!

cheers,

W. :o

You are missing a few things to make this mixture work. I've done a bit of research into making biodiesel and I think that would make for a better solution than just straight old cooking oil. It will most likely run on it but not very well or at least what I think anyway. I can send you some infformation that I have collected if you're interested.

In the Netherlands it was sunflower oil, mixed with 10% diesel. Older type diesels had no problems the latest models could not. Don't know exactly why.

Problem in the Netherlands is that it is illegal, guess the same in Thailand. Missing out on those taxes you know.

If everybody starts to put sunflower oil in their diesel engines i guestimate the price will jump up to be just as expensive as the normal diesel.

If you measure the carbon dioxide emission short term it looks like a "closed" circle. When you burn diesel you release carbon dioxide that was in the atmosphere a lot longer ago. How about planting a lot of trees and make up for those emissions at least a little bit.

High All,

Thanks for the info...guess its the biodiesel angle then..

In terms of it being "illegal" who the ###### is gonna know? Would love to see a copper sticking his nose to the exhaust to catch me out! would be worth it just to see him on his knees! :D

Anyone here currently running boidiesel??

Cheers,

W. :o

There was a topic in the Thailand News forum awhile back that said that the gov't was making a biodiesel production facility somewhere in Thailand...or maybe they said that they had already made it and it was now producing....or something like that. Go do a search in the News forum and I bet you can find it. It seemed like there were lots of posts with links to internet sites on veg oil and biodiesel....can't remember exactly but I think its worth your while.

If you are in an area that you can get used cooking oil in a decent amount of volume then you can get a machine to produce your own biodiesel. It's not a hard process to do. The main problem is the loss of methanol in the process. There are big plants that can recover up to 90+ percent of the methanol in the processing. I do believe that I read a while back that the Thai government was openning a plant near Chiang Mai but I can't remember all the details. There was also mention then about converting more land to palm oil production also as it yields a lot more oil than most any other plant.
