Confirm Dr.Ps comment.

I tried for a "retirment visa" there and it was almost impossible. The woman who was behind the bullet proof glass baricade was absolutely no hlep, rude, abrupt and quite simply said that "each counsulate can apply the rules anyway they want". Her application of the existing rules was so strict as to make complying almost impossible and certainly exhausting.

And I am no neophyte in dealing wth governmental entitities.

I've always been of the opinion that some consular posts would prefer to issue nothing more complex than a tourist visa. This avoids any potential for controversy if an application is later discovered to be less than sincere. I'm sure that some of the Thai staffers at the "official" consular posts such as embassies are on the bureaucratic make and angling for some better appointment in the future. These folks would prefer to not make any decision having the potential to come back to haunt them.

:o Oh, are they that bad ? you guys're scaring me. Anyway, thanks for the input. I'll pass this information to my friend. Sure that he'll need to organise his plan to get the visa.

Few more questions please,

1. What's the easiest place to get the visa, auntie Jaye in Adelaide or Uncle Bill in Brissie :D

2. Do they require any docs to submit or just application form and money and you're done ?

3. consulate in Sydney is a "non-go" place if you need the visa, right ?

Thanks.

if you want another option you can try melbourne, handed my passport, money and form over and got passport with 'o' type visa back the next day. asked about 'b' type and they said all that was required extra was a letter from the business you were going to work for in thailand.

example of what is required on a letter can be found here:

hope that helps
