Hi Folks,

I will be taking my Thai wifey to visit my parents in Spain soon.

I am a UK national. Parents own property in Spain. We will be staying with them for a few weeks.

My question to you all is this; Do my parents need to obtain from their local police station an "official invitation letter" ???

After having visited the UK and Italy several times with the wifey, this "official" invitation letter only available from the police station seems a bit over the top.

Do any of you have any experience with this???

Cheers

Details of how to apply can be found on the Spain Visa Application Centre . Check carefully as many of the requirements wont apply to her as she will be traveling with her EU citizen spouse.

If she has ILR then officially she should not need a visa to visit Spain at all as non-EU citizens with permanent residence in an EU state do not need a visa to visit other EU states. However, anecdotal evidence suggests UK ILR is not always recognised by immigration officers at EU borders as permanent residence as it is indefinite not permanent!

Airlines are also reportedly sometimes reluctant to carry people with ILR and no visa to other EU countries in case they are refused entry at the other end.

So it's probably worth getting her a visa anyway; as she is the spouse of an EU citizen it will be free.
