ISTANBUL, TURKEY (BNO NEWS) -- Former Mayor Ahmet Cevdet YaÄŸ was shot dead while attending a funeral in southern Turkey on Wednesday, the Hurriyet Daily News reported on Thursday.

YaÄŸ, 61, was a municipal assembly member and former mayor of the Seyhan district in the southern Turkish province of Adana. He was buried on Thursday after being killed during his cousin's funeral.

Authorities said that the 61-year-old politician was shot ten times at a cemetery in Seyhan. He was immediately rushed to the Private Adana Hospital where he died shortly after.

Seyhan police have since launched an investigation and identified the attacker as funeral attendants witnessed the crime. Law enforcement agents are currently looking for the suspect, who has been identified as CoÅŸkun Özçakmak.

YaÄŸ was married with two children and, at the moment of his death, he was a contractor as well as a member of the Adana municipal assembly. He represented the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

He served as mayor of Seyhan district from 1994 to 1999. At that time, he was a member of the Motherland Party, or ANAVATAN, which is now defunct.

Azim Öztürk, the current Seyhan mayor, condemned the murder of YaÄŸ and said that police forces will apprehend the suspect as soon as possible.
