No, not automatically.

Sadly though, most are in the UK. Famous for simply being famous (and talentless), they are worshiped by the masses. It's a sad spectacle to witness.

Remind those of us who dont follow the lives of the beautiful people here in Bkk.

Where abouts does little Anny and her mother fit in, hardly HiSo, is she still on the A or B list, or has she just gone back to obscurity, not much face to be gained being seen in the company of yesterdays stars, even more face to be lost if God forbid your picture actually appears in one of those trashy dara rags pictured next to her.

When you say celebs, does that also include the Thai Superstars (whatever that may mean)?

NOt only no, but the basic premise as put forth by the OP is flawed (as to who IS hi-so)

I agree with Samran.

Being a celeb doesn't necessarily mean you're a memnber of the high society, since THAT was the OP's question. A guy can be a celeb because he's a martial Thai Boxing fighter but he won't be a high society member by fact he's a good fighter.

Same-same for singers, actors/actresses.

Ask Chubby Brown, he asked the same question didnt he?

Ooops sorry, wrong song.

and the reason is, yes...because they have a lot of money and show it.

I thought a lot of actors here don't have that much money

Indeed - being famous here has nothing to do with being Hi-so. (Most Hi-so isn't to the average person anyway.)

Neither does famous mean someone is rich...

Let's just say that they are all out of our user base's league.

And that is pretty much it.

There is no real criteria, but if you haven't got a RSBC membership, then you probably don't qualify.

It helps if you come from a family of tycoons, or are 'arty' in some way (or both). Political families can sometimes make it in, but not as often as you think, so if your surname is Yoobamrung and you are the sons of Chalerm, then probably not.

If you have kids, the would probably be sent to boarding school in the UK, Switzerland, or Geelong Grammar if they want them within 8 hours flying time (though not for university in Australia). Oxbridge or Ivy League. Perhaps a stint a Chula.

You are generally polite and well spoken. Not an attention seeker.

If you didn't get a senior member of the royal family or the PM to bless your wedding, then you probably don't qualify.

An ML or MR in front of your name helps, though if you are one of these 'na Auythaya's' then it can be a bit hit of miss.

You probably have flown first class more times than you have sat in a BKK Taxi, or rode a skytrain.

But the OP claims to be Thai, so he should know all of this? So I don't know why he is asking....

High Society in this thread is defined correctly but unfortunately the majority of normal Thais DO call celebs "hi-so" because of the basic attributes of wealth, fame, respect, admiration and snootiness. They misuse the term and put people into the hi-so category who don't belong.

High Society in the UK aren't rich footballers, but the "old" money and family names linked to Royalty.

High Society young folk in Thailand aren't always as demure, understated and polite as you may think - there is a club called the "Bangkok Billionnaires Boys Club" for the types that Samran mention. Big family names, regular Tatler photos, white shirt and black suit at all times....but also frequent Thonglor in their convoy of Lambo toys and entertain impressed young girls at top restaurants any weeknight they wish.

So what you are saying then, is the esteemed members of TV who claim to married to hi-so's could in fact be telling porkies...?....:whistling:

Celebs aren't all or even mostly hi-so. That's why you'll hear that whatever star is now involved with a 'hi-so.' Of course, it's all relative as well.

Name a star to a good number of middle class housewives, and I'd bet they can tell you which is which. If you ask Noi from Rainbow 2, they all are hiso... but so is my cousin Meng who owns the pharmacy on the corner, and Simran, the guy who owns the tailor shop down the street.

:)

The only ones who I have had reservations about being hi-so are those who mentioned that they were and their close friends as well. Needless to say, I was not considered a close friend.

I have heard more than one Thai remark that a particular star is hiso as opposed to stars who are not hiso. The woman who announces the upcoming shows on True Series is an example. More than one Thai has mentioned to me things like "Oh, she is hiso." As that seems to be a point of interest as it is not usual, I would have to surmise that only those celebs who were born hiso are hiso and merely being a celeb is not enough of a qualification.

Someone else pointed out that celebs are the hiso of the UK. That is certainly the case in the US. Celebs are the royalty/hiso/top dogs of US society. And that is sad.

Ghastly isn't it?

They leak pornographic films of themselves to increase their standing in the community. :ermm:

It worked for Paris Hilton. And yes, it is ghastly and a pretty sad comment on our society.

Joan Rivers has yet to try this tactic. Thankfully. :jap:

Pretty much spot on ----

Your definition also eliminates "the generals" in large part which is also correct. A connection to important people doesn't get you into the "hi-so" club, nor does being Thai/Chinese but there are many members of both of those groups that ARE Hi-So. Being Nouveau riche certainly doesn't make you Hi-So. In fact it likely makes you quite the opposite ... (talked about but not respected.) Being a scion of one of the regional political families may get you there but it isn't a sure thing.

Most celebs are nouveau riche ... and therefore get into the gossip rags but not on the society pages.

Are those HiSo wedding magazines published in English now?

If I was a billionaire it'd probably be Tokyo, Hong Kong, Monaco, Rome, Shanghai, Dubai, South of France, Zurich for me. Being a billionaire in Thailand is like being a great white shark in a swimming pool.

"Whoo, Royal Sport Club have Starbuck and golf!!!... Oh, Thong Lo HiSo bar I see Girly Berry cousin Pim!!!"

Funny you mention that. Hasn't something like that been leaked in Thailand as well about a VERY hi-so person? Any one know what I am on about? It was removed quite promptly off the net.

I've no idea, I have a television but it doesn't have an aerial (by choice).
