UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- The United Nations on Wednesday welcomed the peaceful presidential elections after the results were announced last week.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commended the people of Comoros for the peaceful atmosphere in which the presidential and gubernatorial elections were held last December 26.

The results of the polls were announced on January 13 by the Comoros’ electoral commission and constitutional court. The vote count indicated that Ikililou Dhoinine was the winner of the presidential elections.

Dhoinine received 61 percent of the votes. He was the deputy president under outgoing President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi. The results were accepted by all presidential candidates.

Ban remarked the important role played by the African Union in encouraging the holding of peaceful and democratic elections in the Comoros.

International observers from the African Union, the Arab League, the "Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie" and the Organization of the Islamic Conference stated that the elections were free and fair.

The Secretary-General reiterated the UN's commitment to support the Comorian people in the consolidation of national unity, democracy and promotion of socio-economic development.
