Hi All!

Hi everyone,

I'm so pleased to find this part of the forum - I've been lurking on the general forums for a couple of months now and was starting to wonder if there were any foreign women in Thailand at all :whistling:

I've read a lot of the posts here and just wanted to say hi to the lovely ladies on the forum, you've given me a load of tips and info already, and to ask if there are any of you on Samui? I'm arriving there on 30 March and staying 6 months; I'll be doing a bit of volunteering with the dog rescue centre and would love to stay long term although I know that's difficult with visas and work permits etc. I'm a journalist and editor so will be looking for something like that anywhere in Thailand, any tips would be most appreciated! I've been to Thailand before and have travelled a fair bit, I have a couple of years' TEFL as well (doesn't everyone...?).

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for all the tips on the forum, I hope to meet some of you in person at some point. Y'all are an inspiration :)

Welcome and good luck! Great you are helping with the dog rescue too. I am sure you wont' have any difficulty meeting people on Samui.

I hope not! I'm quite a party person here in Ireland but will be toning it down a lot in Thailand, I want to get a fair bit of writing done too...

(Oh, and forgot to mention in my last post I've done a load of jobs, fron cleaning loos to pulling pints, so any job hints in any field are welcome, not just writing! I know it might be difficult finding work though so I'm pretty flexible about moving on if I have to.)

Quick question - I was going to buy some clothes out on Samui but from reading the forums this might not be possible? I'm a UK 10-12 (14 on top so I know already to bring plenty of bras hehe). I may end up having to leave Samui and possibly Thailand after the 6 months to find a teaching job elsewhere (I've spent a couple of years in Tokyo) - should I bring a couple of smart outfits with me or can I pick stuff like that up in my size? I'm trying to pack as lightly as possible but don't think I'd feel prepared without at least one smart outfit. Thanks :)

And if any ladies on Samui want me to bring out tea or tampons or whatever just say the word. :)

Greetings from (unfortunately) rainy Samui... ! If you are looking for work - I'd suggest you to bring a smart outfit with you - there are lots of small boutiques in Samui, but most of them sell bags and other accessories and beach wear. If you are looking to get into a Thai company, you must wear a proper uniform at the interview.. Just a quicky answer, hope it helps.

What would be considered a "smart outfit" for a farang lady interviewing for a job in Thailand. I'm guessing that there might be some differences about what would be considered appropriate in Thailand vs. the West? For example, color of clothes, skirt or pants, length of skirt, etc, etc. I have no idea, other than that an "Ally McBeal Micro Mini" might not be a good idea for a serious interview in Thailand.

Definitely no ally mcbeal!

I'd bring one smart outfit but you can get clothes made in Bangkok if needed. Samui is limited in shopping altho I hear the Tescos isn't too bad. Bras most definitely. Since you will be working with the dog rescue you will probably end up wearing alot of fishermen trousers but you will want to bring nicer clothes to wear when you go out.

Not sure what those sizes are in the US tho but there are plenty of clothes in Bangkok.

For what I know, a nice jacket and trousers / skirt are appreciated. Pretty much the same in Western. The youngsters here usually wear their school uniforms in a job interview - white shirt and blue skirt.

Thanks loads, Glodenglow and SBK. GrahamF, I'm not quite so naive that I think a miniskirt would be appropriate in any working environment. Thailand or elsewhere!

Will bring a smart shirt or something similar with me and buy a couple of pairs of fisherman's trews for working at the centre...thanks again, all.

laugh.gif The Ally McBeal thing was just a joke, I was not implying that you are naive. Sorry, if you took offense. My question about appropriate dress for Thailand was serious though.

More an excuse to post a pic of Ally, methinks... :D.

No offense taken, was being tongue in cheek myself. Having quite an amusing mental image now of me traipsing down the beach in a miniskirt and heels, clutching my CV... :)
