Jai Dee,

Are your speeds consistently that bad?

I also upgraded to the Maxnet4life, at two locations in the Pattaya area.

On one location I have 512/256, and the other 256/128 speeds.

Apart from the occasional hick-ups, most probably technical problems, I've always got decent speeds. Currently I test:

Last Result:

Download Speed: 419 kbps (52.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 129 kbps (16.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

This is normally pretty consistent trhoughout the whole day.

My main problem with them is that occasionally their RAS servers go down for a couple of hours, and my modem/router always gives an authorization error!

Jai Dee,

Are your speeds consistently that bad?

Yes mate... :D

That's why I'm looking with interest at Mouse's IPSTAR possibility.

I've complained many many many times, and no improvement. :o

Jai Dee,

Please try the test below which uses a local (Thailand) server:

http://www.adslthailand.com/bandwidthmeter/

This will tell us if the problem is local or as a result of International gateway problems.

Will give it a try tonight.

Thanks Mike.

Interesting... results as follows: :o

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /bandwidthmeter/ on this server.

And MaxNet was down completely last night... so here are tonight's results:

Download Speed: 27 kbps (3.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 75 kbps (9.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

And the streamguys are saying I have a 27.1 kbps download speed and a 72.3 kbps upload speed.

What to do...? The Thai TT&T bullshit is starting to seriously piss me off... :D

Yes, I too signed up for Maxnet 512/256 790 baht / month service two months ago. Initially good but not as advertised. After two weeks complained that KBPS was usually below 50 and only once in a while above 100 KBPS.  Service improved for a week or so before returning to low bit rates as before.  Only time that the service is acceptable is pre-dawn - guess most people are still in their beds.

The office said the service would improve quote "quite soon" unquote. That was six weeks ago and it only seems to get worse. In short, the Maxnet service speeds suck, but I am at a loss to know what else I can use up here in the sticks of Surin.

:o

Well the sticks of Surin sure beat the pants off mainstream Pattaya where TOT line broadband is not available, and ji-net and csloxinfo full time dial up do not work. I am currently on the TOT free dial up service (cuts off every 2 hours) TOT1288, and judging by what i read I will stay there as nothing seems reliably proper value under 2500 baht per month. So lets waste as little money as possible.

JD,

Go here:

adslthailand

and click on "Speed Test" in the upper right side of the screen.

That will open a separate window with your speed results.

Mine from just now and using MaxNet4Home 512/256:

428.9 kbps

If your modem and phone line are OK, you should get about the same.

Mike

Sorry Mike, I missed your post last night.

I'll try again tonight.

BTW, how can you check if your phone line is OK?

I assume the router is OK because I've had speeds of up to 420 kbps when I was on the MaxNet4Home package during the promotional period... before they put the brakes on it.

So maybe there's a problem with the phone line?

One way to check the phone line:

Pick up a phone that is on the same line as the ADSL modem.

Listen for the dial tone.

Press the "1" key on the dial pad.

That will stop the dial tone.

Listen carefully. It should be dead quiet.

If you hear any hissing, pops or crackles, that is noise that can prevent or degrade a DSL connection.

I am from Surin and signed up for Maxnet with TT&T four months ago (512/256).

Initially the service was good, not quite as advertised but still pretty good. Within two weeks the service deteriorated to less than 100 KBPS, usually around 70 KBPS, and I complained that the service was well below that as advertised. TT&T said the service would improve soon. That was three months ago and the service remained pretty slow. However, things have improved and for the past three weeks or so I have enjoyed transmission speeds over 400 KBPS most times of the day, although the middle of the night is usually best - very fast!

This morning, I tested the speed at 1000 hours before responding to this thread - 405 KPBS. I am more than happy to pay 790 baht per month for this kind of service. :o:D:D

Jai Dee,

What router are you using?

Most routers have a screen where you can see the details of your phone connection.

It should give signal to noise ratio and line attenuation, boh for the download and upload channel.

I've got a D-Link DSL-500T router.

Where do I look for the connection details?

Any help would be much appreciated.

To get into the router, follow this link:

http://192.168.1.1/

You'll be asked for a user name and password. The default is "admin", but I hope someone has changed this and told you what it is....

Click on the "Status" tab and then on the "ADSL" button.

Tell us what you see here:

We're interested in the bottom three lines:

SNR Margin

Line Attenuation

Data Rate

As a general guide line, SNR should be over 12dB and the line attenuation should be less then 60dB...

Buadhai, it seems your line picks up quite some noise! 18dB SNR is not very high although it should not give problems!

These are my line parameters:

OK guys, this is what I get from the ADSL Status page:

ADSL status shows the ADSL physical layer status.

ADSL Firmware Version: 4.01.00.00 - 1.01.00.00 - 1.01.00.00 Annex A - 01.06.06 - 0.49

Line State Connected

Modulation Multi-mode

Annex Mode ANNEX_A

Max Tx Power -38 dBm/Hz

Item Downstream Upstream Unit

SNR Margin 19 28 dB

Line Attenuation 18 15 dB

Data Rate 32 128 kbps

I'll now try out that speed test link Mike... back soon. :o

Results as follows:

Your current bandwidth reading is: 28.70kbps

which means you can download at 3.59 KB/sec. from our servers.

Test Time: November 2, 2005, 7:52 pm

So... is it my telephone line or my ISP service?

Definately troubles with your phoneline!

When your router synchronizes with the dslam (at the phone exchange) it will test the snr at your rated speed. If the snr is not high enough the router will try at a slower speed, until the snr is high enough to sustain an error-less connection.

In your case the router had to shift down all the way to 32kbps to get a sufficiently high snr. This explains your test result which comes in at 28.7 kbps.

Your line attenuation is very low(=good), so this means you are very close to the exchange.

However the snr(signal to noise ratio) is way to low (19dB at 32kbps), so somewhere your phoneline picks up so much noise, resulting in the router having problems hearing the real adsl signal over the noise.

No problems with the ISP here, purely a phone line problem.

Cheers mate.

I suspect I'd be better off getting a new line pulled in from outside.

I feel like a right git... all this time I've been blaming TT&T... even going to additional expense to get the Life package 'cos the MaxNet Home package was painfully slow. :o

One thing I can't understand though... even if my telephone line was so bad, why was I able to get download speeds of 400kbps for a few days? :D

I just found the culprit... a faulty handset plugged onto one of the telephone outlets... :o
